Akatarawas
Akatarawas
Gday what is the state of this track? Never been before, is it for shineys or a bit more hard out? Would one capable 4wd (winch, lockers, 35s) be ok to go it alone, or some of it alone at this time of year? Cheers.

Akatarawa Rd is a standard sealed public road crossing the range from Kapiti to Upper Hutt, you drive cars and all that sort of shit through there. Akatarawa forest is locked up and administered by Wellington Regional Council, there is access for recerational 4wd vehicles administered by ARAC (Akatarawa Recerational Access Committee) http://www.arac.org.nz/ but you need to be a registered trip leader or use a registered trip leader to get a permit to take vehicles into the forest. Most if not all Wellington clubs have trip leaders to gain access into the forest and the system is easy to use and works pretty well.
Off the top of Akatarawa Rd is a 4wd track called Odlins Rd taking you along the ridgetop and down into the Waiotauru catchment, theres some pretty steep shit, washouts and big drops up there so you go at your own risk and go as far as your comftable, its more suited to smaller and swb vehicles if you want to go down into the waiotauru catchment

Is it still possible to get all the way thru to the Snowy (Eastern Waiotauru I think?). Last trip we only went in as far as the hut, but years ago I went all the way thru to the Snowy. From there apparently you can walk through to Otaki Forks?
