Post by Dirtydog »

Hey guys just wondering if anyone has done this before?

Going to need to do it for the ratrod, as the engine/gearbox im using isnt a cardinal shaft setup, and i will be using a safari rear diff.

heard a rumor somewhere that you can use falcon calipers, but starting to thik thats for hilux diffs.

i know of one guy on here that has used falcon calipers for a safari rear diff..(cant remeber his user name.) but got told my the local ford wreaker that they were sh*t and not to use them. Also looked into using leone calipers, but the disc diameter is too large.. I then looked at a nice set of wilwood calipers that wood have worked untill i found the price.... now im going to make a custom carden disc set up using a jag handbrake caliper.
modified surf, hardly drive it seem to keep modifying it....

Aww bugger.

has to be a disc setup on the axle i think, i will have to buy new rotors for it either way (ones on it were shagged)

are there smaller rotors that would fit?

If you're meaning the Falcon Calipers with the handbrake built in, I wouldn't trust them ,even if you rekitted them and they are very old now.

(AU and newer started using drum /disc setups ) and the drums go out of adjustment very quickly, and can be noisy if you don't get the adjustment perfect .

Is this vehicle going to be road legal ?
How about using Hydralic hand brake setup ?
If you're not fussed about using the Safari brakes, I'd say
get hold of some Silvia s13/ s14/ s15 Rear brake callipers and discs
Much smaller than Safari size, and would be 4stud or 5 stud (all turbo ones are 5stud, non turbo is usally 4)
but if it's a ' Rod then maybe it will do the job for you

vehicles going to be road legal, scratch built

The reason im using the safari diff is its strong, well strong enough for a 300hp nissan v8.

also because i have it around allready.

Looking at keeping 6 stud as its a mitsi l200 chassis, with 6 stud front discs.

not worried about the width of safari diff or what i have to do to modify, but easier is better.

is there any rotors from a 6 stud disc handbrake setup that would fit onto the diff?

Can you get hold of a Pajero rear end? it'll match the width of the front, comes with a strong rear end and drum in disc handbrake?
They are cheap as chips to get hold of too.
SWB V6 Paj with one or two mods ;)

I used EA Falcon calipers on a scratch built vehicle, the bracket needs to be tig welded and crack tested.I may have a bracket still that I used to mock it all up.Despite what has been said above they work bloody well and I can leave skid marks on the road from both wheels if I pull the hand brake on at low speeds and you can't drive over it easily, you know when you've left it on.Foot brake is excellant as well.My rear rotors are original Y60 but are 16mm wide and new pads fit over, contact is slightly out from bottom of rotor but pads contact fully on the larger diameter.I would use them again and did a fair bit of research and could not find any thing better.

Looks like thats the way to go then.

plenty of ea's down here in wreckers, so i may aswell grab the brake booster etc at the same time.

to the handbrake in the drum thing.

owning a terrano has shown me that they are kants of things when they decide not to work, and dont work that well very often.

Also want rear wider either way, so i can fit either some phat tyres on it, or some thingk duals..
