Panhard rod question

Post by zukmeista »

Ok the Daihatsu I just bought is leaf sprung solid axle both ends, the unusual thing is it has a panhard rod on the front diff. :? I have done some research that indicates it and the swaybar are best removed, the swaybar is definitely going but not sure whether to remove the panhard rod? Here is some pics if it helps.

And yes, it does have Landrover's patented 'rust protection system' installed.

Why not drive it and see how it goes before messing with it. I'd say if its there then there will be a reason. I've seen mention of the springs not being up to the side to side loading put on em so the panhard is there to allow for it but I don't know. I'd have just stuck with the zook :?

My Cj has one on the front. It is a little heavier than your rig though and has SOA conversion. Have not tried it without it fitted, would imagine it would wonder all over the place. Would be interested to hear if it makes any difference to handling if you decide to remove it. Can always put it back in if you need it.

on full compression that axle has to move to the left a good 30mm atleast? Thats a hell of a strain on the bushes/shackles :?

Yes, that is why people reckon it's a good idea to chuck it, supposed to make them flex better and with open diffs it needs all it can get!
Not sure whether the diffs have any relation to Dana diffs, the center is a similar style but the knuckles are the usual Jap setup with C.V.'s.

Its there to remove the bump steer. If you take it out the diff wont move sideways as it moves up and down and with the crossover steering this will induce bump steer.

Same principal as the track rod thing on a leaf sprung lux, but this has crossowver steer, not a j arm
Toy - Zuk chassis tub, hilux 4.88 axles and transfer, Nissan CA18DE motor and auto trans, sc12 supercharger, 32 10'5 simex, twin motor 8274 custom freespool. Well the parts are all there in various corners of the shed

Interesting, maybe from an MQ Patrol? Seems 90% of Japanese diffs are drop-out banjo type.

my thoughts as well, althou hard on the spring hanger bushes.

on thinking about bump steer, the panhard rod will at least keep it consistant.
rather than std leaf setups where hard left hand whell fully compressed and right hand hanging has the steering box completely confused, as well as the driver

Thats definitly a F75ish looking diff. Dont ever recall there even being mounts for one on mine before they were removed for hilux ones. Just do some testing with and without it.
Dont follow me. i'll get stuck and need a tow..

my blizzard had that same setup and when i took it off it was a bastard on road. cause they only run two leaves from factory it tended to move sideways bit when cornering. When i got my lift it had an extra leaf so worked better with out it. I just took it off on the hard runs as i tended to um push it rather hard on the road
Those are the standard diffs on that truck. Are as strong as buggery and way bigger in dia than hilux axles. Good thing is they the same stud pattern as jeeps/suzukis/ladas.
Fyi an article i read when i had it reckoned that the drive line was wayyy over engineered for the sixe of the truck. And they have a pto drive.
