Terrano d21 Not engaging gear? Auto trans problems..
Hi guys, in a bit of a pickle.
Last night went to take the terrano up the road and it wont engage gear? Not even at all, drive or reverse, its not stuck in neutral with the diff selector so Im really at a bit of a loss.
Ive noticed that when you put the key to on, just before you crank the motor, the auto trans pressure and auto temperature light do NOT come on any more. Also, when you do start the car, the handbrake light stays on.. Im guessing this is some crude sort of safety circuit.
Any ideas of where I can start looking first?
Do these gearbox's have an electronic control module?
Cheers and thanks for your help.

I'd try tipping ball bearings down the auto dipstick tube, the smaller the better, a handfull should do it. If that does nothing, try sand
If you break it... build it stronger.

sure your transfer case is not in neutral ?

You ##### rant on about other people expressing their opinions when there not up to your technical level ( so you arrogant ##### think). And people are asking for genuine advise and get shot down. This forum has been ruined!

My guess would be that the spline in the TC is stripped.
Re: Terrano d21 Not engaging gear? Auto trans problems..
Yes, they are electronic control. Have a look over all fuses, wiring piping to and from trans. But sounds like you might be up for a bit of an expensive repair bill
, as it should drive (poorly) even with malfunctioning electronics.
Prob best to have it towed to a workshop for assessment

I have no problem with peoples opinions, just the ones plucked from there arse, and yes this forum is being ruined by those that keep asking the same questions without putting in any research of there own, expecting others to materialize an answer from limited facts. People with limited "technical level" as you put it, who arn't even prepared to read a service manuel, let alone own one. Gets a little tiresome.

If you break it... build it stronger.

Cheers for the help man!
Nah I probably should have done a bit more searching, I was just in a rush as I had to drive the car to work the next day and i was trying to see if it was something common. It was late and I gave up to fix the next day..
Turns out, the small amount of trans fluid that leaked out when I replaced the radiator that night was enough to stop it engaging gear! The sump gasket looks like it had been leaking slowly some time.. Im kind of lucky really, that I wasnt driving down the highway when it stopped, can imagine it would ruin the trans at speed.
Oh, and the reason the a/t temp light wouldn't come on when you put the key to the on position before starting was I must have knocked and split the vacuum hose that goes from the back of the alternator to a sensor. Once I cut and reconnected that, all was well.
Anyway, I took the day off work got fresh oil, sump gasket and filter and now all is well transmission side of things!

Re: Terrano d21 Not engaging gear? Auto trans problems..
you have to have the correct amount of oil
even slighty low they can play up
also when replaceing a gearbox it has to be the correct one
many terreno will fit but they dont behve correct
the number is on the firewall if you have to replace gearbox.
sometimes when it looks as if the gearbox is stuffed
a trans shop can take the gearbox sump off and do something ..clean the filter..in trans in there and fix faults seems to me its better to have to much oil then to little in trans sump
regards dip stick holders alot of enginners full up the terreno this way...... far easyer.... down the dip stick blows out any over full
and if you find you terreno outo changes gears ok when its lifted so all wheels run free no ground contact
but when you drive it it goes 1 2 then free wheels you stop turn engine off and away you go and it does it again its the tork converter

Did you get trans power flushed when changed filter? A lot of people don't an just change filter, this doesn't drain all the oil such as the oil in TC...if not i would recommend it just uncase there was a small but of metal on metal action when oil was low which may have entered the oil system. These trans need clean oil, frequent servicing an good cooling and then they are reliable
