Even a series LR should not break in that soft stuff. Probably damaged the diff before this.

I did it several times in my first 4x4 :D :D

On paper the Land Rover was a very heavy duty, well thought out design. The intention was that the axle shaft would fail first.. & being a full float system meant the operator could change it in the field without even removing the wheel. But then they used 10 spline inners and missed the part about extracting the bit of broken axle stub from the diff centre in in the field.

According to these guys, 90% of the time its the hemisph. cross shaft that fails, losing drive to the entire end. Then of course being full time 4x4 there's no way of manually disconnecting that end from the drivetrain, other than pulling the propshaft, which makes limping home even more stressful.

Are Rover Differential inherently weak?
This a question that is occasionally asked but unfortunately frequently answered incorrectly. The answer is absolutely — NO.
