Mud Tyre advice - 60 Series Landcruiser

Hey All,

I’m new and looking for a little advice regarding which mud tyres to purchase.
I have a 60 series Landcruiser VX that I use as a daily driver.
Diff Ratio is 3.7:1 I believe. Extended shackles have been fitted so it sits about 50mm above standard height.
I spend most weekends outdoors, hunting, fishing, rock climbing etc which seems to ultimately mean 4 wheel driving. I’m also keen to do the odd club event and do some of the 4WD trails around the North Island.
I’m looking at something in a 33” as I’m told 35 is too much given the diff ratio’s.
I’ve been looking at the Kumho KL71,or the Silverstone MT-117.
Other recommendations or considerations? Maxxis?
I have a set of AT’s that I will swap out over summer to extend their life. I thought about putting the mud’s on only when I intend to use them, but in reality I doubt that would happen. Changing tyres every other weekend will get boring, fast. So they are more than likely going to be a used as a daily drive.

Have a look at 33" Servero MT's by GT Radial. I run them on my Safari as an all round tyre and have found them to be a good tyre and am getting some good miles on them as well. They also stand taller than Maxis tyres

Not an expert by any means, however i have had the privilege of trying a few different sets.
The best set by far have been the firestone M/Ts, I have not seen too many of these running around but they were amazing, definitely put my maxxis buckshots to shame and did really well on the road too, they were pretty quiet and handled well in the wet, but did wear a bit quicker on the open road.
The maxxis buckshots have been the worst, I had a set of 31" A/Ts that could out performed them (gonna get shot for that statement).

Not had any experience with the Kumoh or silverstones sorry, but have heard really good things about the savero's, they are well priced and seem to last very well.

Have a look at the maxxis Bighorn 764 its a new design they have brought out and looks pretty aggressive and are a cool looking tyre.

i'd also go for the gt radial. but only the savero mt as the adventurea's wear unevenly and quickly

I’m going to take a good look at the GT Radials. Any idea on what I should be paying for them? Currently waiting on a couple of prices.

Has anyone used Mickey Thompson Baja MTZ or Cooper STT? Both have been strongly recommended in store, but of course they are asking for decent $$$

I think I paid around the 300 mark plus gst a corner last time for my 33's (Severo Mt)

Give Chris a call at Tony's tire service in Papatoetoe 09 278 6109. He really knows his stuff and gets hold of heaps of "near new" muddies. He does heaps of offroading and knows his tires and he does sell the Saveros

Stay away from the Cooper ...are rubbish off road.The have changed the tread pattern & are now rubbish.But do go ok on the rd.
Have a look at Nanchang Mudstars...very hard wearing & cheap...go ok off rd too.

You sure you wouldn't consider a good A/T?

I couldn't be arsed changing out tyres/rims so just went with a good 31 A/T for my 60.
Goes well enough offroad on the last couple of trips, doesn't wear heaps on the road, and performs well in the wet on the road as opposed to most M/T's.

hankooks on 15x8 rims $800.00

on2it: Pretty sure. I have a set of new A/T’s on rims.
I am after a set of M/T’s for winter.
I don’t want to get stuck in the middle of nowhere, no cell reception waiting for what might be days for a passerby just because I wanted better road performance.

I got a set of Mickey Thompson Baja MTZ. Not cheap but i love them, seem to clear the mud good and not too noisy on the road... $500+ per tyre
