tow strop

Post by Petemcc »

well my strop snapped the other weekend and now i need a new one. i was thinking of going for a long one as you can always double them over and the people i normaly go out with have shorter ones. what do people suggest i want cheap but obviously no compramises on quality. i want a stretchy one. any advantages between strops and ropes? obviously the flat strop rolls up better.
i was looking at this

also how do you people clean your ropes? i always used to put mine throug the washing machine on a gentle cycle.

Cheers Pete

also i need another tow hook on the front and was looking at one of these...
http://www.4wdbits.co.nz/ProductDetails ... oductID=85

though noticed that it was rated at 10,000lbs where as the rope was rated at 9000kg not to sure on the conversion but wouldnt that mean that the hook would come off first? surely you would want the rope to break first.
also in a previous post i remember someone saying that one type of hook was make to open up rather than snap off. is this one of those?

Hell if I put my strops or ropes through the washing machine I could expect a bit of stick from the better half,
Give em a squirt down with a hose and dry in the sun, would not do to tempt fate and try to use the dryer as well. :P

I've only ever used cookes straps, they are easier to store in the back of the cab behind the seats than ropes. But I think you can get better stretch out of a rope than a strap.

2x9m and 1x6m has always covered me so far

When you double a strap you halve the stretch which increases the bang whilst snatching, harder on hooks and attachments.
Also the strap doesn't fit well onto the hook when it is doubled over and can ride up to where the point of the hook tears the strap.
Cookes blue staps are claimed 50% stretch and 8000kg rated.
Bushranger hooks straighten arround 5000 kgs
Cookes chrome hooks straighten arround 9500 kgs but come supplied with cheap looking 12mm bolts with dubious ratings on the head. I like to fit them with 1/2" grade 8 bolts as some of the standard bolts have snapped for me during testing.
As your hook straightens it will often tear the eye on your strop so it can cost you both ways.

not to worried about the cost, just would rather have just a rope fly off than a rope and hook safety wise.
cheers for the advice.

I clean my strops by hooking them up to my truck and towing them through the river at the end of the day.

Cookes chrome hooks should come with 8.8 or the old imperial markings. All 10,000lb tow hooks should come with 8.8 or equivalent, thats the minimum grade for 'High Tensile'.

I clean all my ropes with the garden hose, winch rope, snatch ropes, tow ropes, snatch strap, pretty much everything.
