Smokey Escudo V6

Post by vitz »

Hi all

My flatmate has just bought a 96 2L V6 Escudo with 130,000kms on it.
When he bought it, it seemed fine, but after having it home for a couple of days it blew quite a bit of smoke out the back on start up. Still drove fine, didnt do it for the next few starts but then a few days later billowed it out again on start up.
Anyone know if there are any breathers or pcv valves prone to blocking that mite cause this?
Havnt pulled the plugs for a compression test just yet, hoping it mite be a simple fix.

Any ideas?

Oil separator on the LH rocker cover clogs up. Take the rocker cover off and drill more drain holes in the steel plate. That supposedly solves your problem.

Thanks Churchill,
I was hoping it would be something like that, thats the same bank as the oil filler cap, do you think its worth running some engine flush through and blasting it with compressed air to see it thats the prob or is it pretty common and just needs to be done?

That's the correct side Vits. Defiantly worth a shot with the air gun as the intake manifold has to come off to get access to the rocker cover. This is a very common problem with these engines.

Is it a 2.0l v6?

Thats the one, 2L V6
Just did a quick search on auszookers too and in an old thread someone suggested blocking up breather on that bank and tapping a pushfit fitting into the oil filler cap and running the breather hose to that.

I'll try with the air gun and see what he wants to do, its his 1st car and he bought a zook on my recommendation, he has had it a week and already cleaned it twice!

Thanks for your help Churchill!

Hey Churchill

After a couple of very busy weeks I had a go at sorting the smoky V6 today.
I got a brass pushfit hose tail fitting and drilled a hole in the oil filler cap. I screwed the fitting into the hole, and attached a length of vacuum hose going from the fitting in the oil filler cap to the vacuum fitting on the intake manifold where the rocker cover breather used to go. I then plugged the hose that used to go from the rocker cover breather to the intake manifold.
All seemed to go well and the smoky start ups stopped for the rest of the day. After sitting in the drive for a couple of hours I went to start it again and she billowed out smoke again.
Maybe the vacuum hose is melting?
Any ideas
