24v to 12v (winch)

ive got two winches in my garage, both 24V. now i got a 4x4 again, i wana put one of them on my truck, got a mounting plate coming my way

problem is, my trucks 12v

what can i do here? whats a cheap option if any?

do i need to replace the whole winch motor?

Since youd be best running two batterys, would it not be easy to just connect them to both batts in series?

didnt want to have to spend the money on an extra battery if theres a cheaper option.

discos have a small engine bay also (after the cruiser im used to)

With a bit of fancy wizardry you can do it but you still need the 2nd battery. A mate did it with his winch truck, but blowed if I know how it worked.

you would need to run swithching relays when using the winch
same principle as the starting system on an 80 series cruiser

charges at 12v and then when starter is engaged solenoids/relays connect the 2 batteries in series for 24v

the rest of the vehicle ends up isolated from the batteries (i think) to prevent damage to electronics

same set up as most of the american puss heap trucks have.24 volt starting 12v everything else

Why dont you just sell the two 24 volt ones and buy a 12 volt winch?

Has anyone priced up a 12v motor for one of these recently?
I'm guessing that would be more expensive than a 2nd battery, but someone might have a good lead on some bargin ones?

Its not just the case of buying a second battery, its wiring, fitting etc and as he said he doesn't have the space and for what he intends to do he doesn't need it.

4WDbits have the superduty motors at $600 plus but I am sure if you asked the smaller cheap Chinese import guys such as Tigerz11, Runva etc. they will have replacement motors at reasonable costs.
After all if selling the winches at around $600 the motors must be cheaper than that.

Other option is to search out TM for second hand winch parts.

As pointed out, it can be done, but depends on the $$ you want to spend, and whether you really want to set up the 2nd battery purely to run a 24v winch.

because to get the 24 v you need to link the two batteries in series

you could still draw 12v off one battery while the 2 are link but this would soon f#$k your batteries because of the uneven load

dont want to go with the two batteries.
so what are my options?
buy a new winch motor or swap/sell/buy a 12v winch?

Sell em & buy a 12V - keep an eye on the Supercheap Auto specials - I got a 95000lb Ridge Ryder for $435. Or recently they had 12000lb ones (with synthetic rope) for around $800. OK for general use but obviously not real heavy use. Probably no worse quality than what you have....

I'd sell them, and buy a 12v, otherwise you need to factor in solenoids too, and while they are cheap, it still bumps the price up.
