L200 Diff Swap

Post by troyfield »

Hi all, just signed up to this forum, own a 1994 L200 and looking to do a few mods. Has anyone done a diff (or diff head) swap to get more top end speed ? I spent the weekends off road but do a lot of open road driving during the week, with my standard 4.625 diff ratios im pulling 3000rpm at 100km/h and want to drop this down a bit. Anyonw know if the later model L200/Triton/Pajero diffs heads fit ? After around a 3.9 ratio.

Any help/advise would be much appreciated.

Cheers, Troy

well the easiest way is to put bigger tyres on it if you want to gear it up .
I am presuming its diesal, when does its "power band"( ) kick in?

Are you sure you have 4.625 diffs? My L200 is running at 2400 rpm at 100km/h.
It is a '91 2.5 turbo diesel doublecab with a 5 speed manual 'box.
it's on 31" maxxis mudders.

It has the standard 4D56 turbo diesel engine in it. It has three stickers on the the rear diff, C88, Use only LSD Oil, and 4.625 so am assuming the last one is the ratio. Unsure of the original tyre size, currently has 235/75/15 on it.

My brother has a set so will try them this weekend. My power starts at around 2000 and stops at around 3000.

http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/tireca ... 15-31-10.5

That's about 7% bigger for the 31's, or around 170 rpm less at 100kmh

I think my earlier gearbox has a taller ratio 5th gear but it is much weaker than the later ones so no good for towing.

What year is yours ? Do you know your gearbox ratios ? I had also heard the earlier models had taller (but weaker) 5th gears. Im not too worried about this as i will stay in 4th to do any heavy towing.

I have a '91 Strada. It's a JDM import version of the L200 and it has the early gearbox but I'm not sure of the ratios.
If you do a search on here I think there is a post with the gearbox codes and ratios.
