Hey All,
I'm pretty new here. I have an 86 Toyota 60 series. So far I have fitted some factory lockers, extended EFS shackles and suspension and some Kumho Muds.
Looking for a little advice on some recommendations of interesting tracks that access reasonable hunting areas or streams to fish? Lakes would be of interest too. I'm based in Auckland so am probably looking around the central Plateau.
I saw a post regarding access to midway hut via Horomanga River in Te Urewera. Really keen to do this. Anyone know if it's ok to do this in winter?
Other options I have so far are:
Northern block of Pureora Forest is on the list also.
Thompsons Track Te Aroha
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Tidy looking truck you got there.

Very nice 60 . I'd be keen to tag along for a fish if you do an outing.

Theres always the Matahi Valley way into Urewera too looks very nice from photos, I know DOC used to issue hunting permits, there used to be numerous issues with 'locals' blockading the road and preventing access but I don't know what the situation is with that these days that was a few years ago, I've always been keen for a drive up there but not too sure if I want to go myself without a decent arsenal
Lake Rerewhakaaitu is another option with fishing access hidden everywhere, depending on lake levels is an interesting track to drive.
Minginui forest although miles from anywhere is always packed with hunters too.
ps. nice 60, looks like its never seen any offroading

Hi, I have a 1990 Cruiser with the suspension, muds etc done. I am also keen on getting to areas to hunt deer. Would be keen to team up, give me a call or text, if you are interested. Paul 021 709-663
Re: Newby looking for tracks with hunting or fishing options
I regularly hunt the Horomanga River area.
ive done this track day and night for many yrs in bikes, quads, SJs and lately my SWB saf.
Taking a LWB cruiser in there will be a challenge, esp if your new to 4wding.
Track has some tight bits/slips for LWB and very large drops at these points. Expect scratches/dents as a min for that sized vehicle.
Very doable , but not for the faint hearted,(few passengers have walked the odd bit).Winter rain will play havoc with the track too.
If your wanting to go during winter down there, I suggest Okui Hut.
you can drive the track (easy but lots of blackberry scratches) to end (swing bridge), At this point you can ford river across whirinaki, if not too high!, allows you to drive right up to hut. Else park & small walk from swing bridge.

Re: Newby looking for tracks with hunting or fishing options
Craydiver: Cheers Good description. I'll give Okui Hut a look.
Gunsmith: yeah keen. Where are you based? Are you a gunsmith?
3VILC: Awesome, Thanks.
Matahi Valley from the description might not be my first choice.. although have heard similar stories about Maungapohatu, and I've never had issues there. Do you know a track name or location?
I'll look into them all hopefully.
on2it: cheers. I'm sure we can work something out. Where are you based?
So I got some directions and went in over the weekend for a look around.
The track was not too bad, a bit narrow in places. Pretty much as described by craydiver. A few decent drops with slips, but other than that fine. We were pretty cautious on the way in, going slow and stopping to check when we couldn't see. It wasn't very wet so that helped. Up the river for one night in the hut and out again the next day.
Thanks to coxsy for the directions.
