Towing setup for 94 Toyota 3.0 diesel

Post by Butcher1 »

Hi all, I have a 94 Toyota, which we want to use to tow a 72 lightweight 12ft caravan. Toyota has done 320000 ks and tows terrible, what would be the best setup for the rear of truck to make towing more enjoyable?
Don't want to spend big money if I can get away with it.
The truck is quite bouncy at the rear. Would I be better off with stiffer coils or some adjustable shocks to the rear?

It's a 1994 surf ,3lt diesel, 320000ks, I'm sure nothing has been done to the suspension. It still has the factory normal and hard ride shocks.

what is terrible?
if its just the ride, shocks would be the first thing. your well and truly overdue for some shocks. stock ones are pretty horrible when new and as they don't last long yours will be absolutely buggered.

anyone thought of weight distribution its a caravan so my guess is too much weight in rear of the van lifting the rear of truck move ya shit forward to add weight onto rear of truck

I had problems with mine - put new shocks all round, and that helped lots. The other big change was bumping rear tyre pressures to 40psi to stop the side wall flex.

Yeah I running tyres at 38psi at mo, will get some new shocks as well. What sort brand of shocks did you put on? Is it best to get adjustable for rear. ESP. For towing caravan? Is it worth putting new coils on rear as the back of truck drops when caravan hooks up?

I have a 4.4mt van and tow it with a SWB Prado fitted with HD springs, there is 114Kg of down weight on the towball. Tows great.
