How strong is a standard terrano front end

Post by J_Dub »

So im wanting to get back into a bit a soft offroading. Mainly to just get back out in the bush n do a bit a hunting.

Ive been thinking of getting a Pajero as they r th toughest ifs trucks. I want to stick with ifs for road comfort as its my daily driver.

While reading up heaps on Terranos most of the emphasis is on strength on a lifted truck and what mods need to be done.

But how strong is the terrano front end when not lifted?

What issues will I encounter running 31s with no spring lift. Just a body lift?

Thanks but those 2 threads I have read and those are threads on modifications.

Im well aware they require mods especially when lifted I just want to know if they hold up good unmodified, regardless I would still fit idler bracket

The point being it answers your question...dis regard the modification

in standard form the nissan 4x4 IFS design has been around a long time... longer then the mitsi design.

And to add to that the Parts interchangeability and compatibility with other models makes it forgiving on the wallet even if you do manage to smash it to bits. For example the tripod type axles are the same used in the nissan B,H,C, and A platforms, for the laymen they are skyline cefiro laurel GTS4 and GTR.

The diff heads carriers pinions and crowns can be found in any of the nissan range and even Fuji heavy Industries used them in there cars.

As for the actual suspension the only weak point really is the steering idler arm which can be remedied once again by replacing it with that from a 2wd navara etc or purchasing the calmini brace.

I recently ditched my idler altogether and did the dual boxes mod.

Lol at comment re cheap parts availability incase you do break something. Mate, if you get a gen2 pajero with 31's you WON'T break anything, even cheaper on the pocket.....

Even in standard form you will bend the steering on a Nissan, and diffs aren't too far behind depending how heavy your foot is.

As strong as a dry noodle. But when you beef them up with 2wd steering and dual box they are awesome

No lift, soft offroading- you'll be fine.
Use good quality joints if any wear out.
Idler brace is a good scheme for helping prevent idler arm twist (possibly the weakest component)
My OE setup (all original nissan parts) lasted years of soft offroading.
Only when I started treating it rough did the tierod ends wear out.
I've had no breakages or bends (have had idler bracket before started treating it rough). Worn 31x10.5s, and 50mm lift.
Cheers,
Nath

You can break anything. The Mitsu Gen 2/2.5 IFS was designed for 35" tyres, its a remarkably good system. Alls you need to do is make the Nissan steering system look like the Mitsu steering system. Re; CVs/diffs, theres not much in it at all, unless you get a V6 Nissan which, like the V6 Mitsu, has 8" front diff and birfield type inner axles.

Just to put it in perceptive, I'm @ Taupo 1000 crewing a V6 rano in class 2 (standard) and it will be fine. Replaced drag link and idler this morning and I expect it to last the whole way. Mind you it will be shagged by the end. Cheap, expendable.

Cheers,
I keep looking for the loose nut behind the wheel, but I can't find it!!

Here is one w/33x12.5s & 3" susp lift shitting its entire factory steering system all over the trail

This is just horrible and embarrassing. The last thing you want on the trail is to be wasting the solid axle guys' time behind or in front of you while they wait for you to install a new steering system.

The guy ended up doing dual box mod + brass bushing in the 4x4 centrelink, which IIRC is what Simon sibainmud did (the original WD21 steering mod) Not reported problems since, you can read about the truck at torymoore.com/pathfinder

Was that a std draglink ??
Air time on a std draglink omg. Maybe my front end would be stronger than I give it credit for
