how high can the fair lead be in relation to the winch?
is it bad if the wire has to go up about 50mm and over the roller? or am i lifting the winch ?
cheers
fairlead mounting
Re: fairlead mounting
that should be fine, my pto winch fairlead inline with centre of the winch drum
89 safari, pto winch, 33x15 simexs. sliders,75mm lift . turbo intercoolered
Re: fairlead mounting
I think its way too high , should be basically inline with where cable comes off the drum, you want as little deflection of cable as possible.
Re: fairlead mounting
ok 1 for and 1 against. any more?
cheers

Re: fairlead mounting
in the ideal world.....
end of the day it is how you can best make it work..
if the fairlead is lifting the rope then it will be forcing the rope into the drum and making it harder for the rope to level wind
it will also be creating uplift on the winch mounting bolts creating more undue stress..
but that said majority of winching is either pulling off to the side so level wind never happens or you are trying to pull the nose up out of the dirty great hole that sucked you down and killed forward momentum,,,,thus the rope is heading up hill so the top roller is taking the weight anyway.
get it as close as possible but dont let ya beer get warm stressing over it
know what i mean

Re: fairlead mounting
If your rope is spools off the top of the drum you want the fairlead slightly higher then center anyway vica versa if it spools of from under the drum.

Re: fairlead mounting
Also if the rope is going up over the roller then straight out to an anchor point it will try to pull the front of the truck down. It might only be a little but it makes it harder on the winch.
