Rattling Gearbox?

Post by a80crewza »

Gearbox is rattling in my 80 series, gets worse when warm. Goes away when clutch is depressed. Any ideas?

I would imagine gearbox out. Strip it down.....
Probably do synchro's while you are in there...
Had that problem with my little 121...But only needed one hand to lift out the box.... And 2x $8 bearings

It only rattles at idle, not while driving.

Clutch release bearing perhaps? If the noise disappears when the clutch pedal is depressed

A buggered clutch release bearing normally gets noisey when the clutch is disengaged and stops when the peddle is released.

Hi, this may or may not be of assistance, but it doesn't sound like release bearing.

A lot of Landcruiser gearboxes always seem to have a rattling noise to some extent when idling or when you coast along with no load on the drivetrain. I think they call it rollover noise but it sounds like chattering or rattling, but its basically engine vibration working its way through the driveline. The noise disappears when you push the clutch in.

Has it got worse or has it always been there? Have you replaced clutch recently? Or even possibly changed gearbox oil with different brand or viscosity?

I put a heavy duty clutch in our Cruiser a few years ago and following that the noise was a lot worse just because the springs in the clutch were not dampening as much of the engine vibration. The noise hasn't got any worse since that time though.

A number of brand new Cruisers I have driven do exactly the same thing, so it doesn't appear to be related to ago or condition - its just what they do.

To discount other parts of the driveline put transfer case in neutral and see if it still makes the noise.

Of course there may be something wrong internally in the box which is causing the noise, but removing the gearbox and transfer case and stripping the gearbox is a big job so you need to be sure of the diagnosis.

Cheers

How many km's on the box?

It's likely to be input shaft bearings as others have said. If it's noisy when driving then it's usually the main shaft bearings.

Matt.
