Hi All,
Trying to point a frien of my wife's in the right direction with some problesms she is having with what I think is a 13bt 1989 Landcruiser ( its a bit tricky trying to get all of the info)
I have pasted below her exact description of the problem - I think its only related to turning off the motor ?
How does the motor turn off when you turn off the key ? Is there a fuel stop / shut off solenoid somewhere ?
Cheers,
Pete
Okay – keep in mind I am a girl and have no idea about cars –so this is my best description …. This has only happened twice in 3mths – when the car is idling after driving a short distance there is a ‘metalic’ sound to the running, nothing too obvious – it all happens when I turn the ignition off!! It’s like it cant turn off and keeps trying to ‘connect’ it’s not like a chugging sound that I had with a car once – it’s very metallic (almost like when you accidentally turn the key when the car is already running) anyway this time it went of for quite some time and sort of smoke came out the top of the bonnet (not on fire smoke??) when the car finally shut itself off I checked under bonnet and under car – no leakage etc left it off for 40mins then tried to start – started first time no worries – but …. A HUGE black smoke cloud puffed out the back!!! (tad embarrassing I was at the supermarket) after the big puff it more or less stopped so I backed out and drove slowly down an alley to see what it did – it was fairly ‘smokey’ then smoke stopped and ran as normal so I drove slowly home – battery light charged, turbo light still going, temperature stayed same (new radiator), oil levels all good (oil/filter change 1,000k ago and always done regularly)
Landcruiser Diesel Fuel problems
Re: Landcruiser Diesel Fuel problems
Gidday,
Motor turn's off by a fuel stop solenoid in the injector pump...
Hard to diagnose the issue from the below, but I'd probably start with the injector pump.
Possible the plunger is failing and allowing a small amount of diesel through which is why it is having trouble cutting off, and a small build up of unburnt diesel in the cylinders is causing the big cloud of black smoke on start up...

Re: Landcruiser Diesel Fuel problems
Probably a faulty fuel cut-off solenoid. Or its getting engine oil in the cylinders - is it burning a lot of oil? Or has the oil been overfilled? Any half-competent diesel mechanic should be able to diagnose the problem quickly...
Re: Landcruiser Diesel Fuel problems
Thanks for the replys....
I think the guy that has looked at it has suggested the solenoid as being the problem - although don't think its been with a diesel mechanic. Some of the info is a bit cryptic...
I will send her to an outfit here in Petone that have been good to deal with in the past.
Cheers,
Pete

Re: Landcruiser Diesel Fuel problems
Being a 13bt it might have the fuel shut off motor like the earlier b series motors not a solenoid, the motors also do start up enrichment. These do give trouble but the controller is usually at fault, I have repaired a few now.
