gear box has a mind of its own.

Post by fish »

Hi all. My challenger seams to skip 5th gear. Only going in for half a second then overdrive. When the overdrive ia off it just stays in 4th. Kinda annoying as its not nice for cruise rpm. Any qlues as to why it would be being a prick.

Pretty sure it will be 4 speed, and it sounds like fairly normal behaviour in my experience. None of mine have wasted any time locking t/c once in 4th and they pull pretty well when they do, I always felt they cruised well. What size tires are you running?

Just 31s wich are standard size option for the truck. its just annoying when cruising and you come to a hill and it goes to fourth in one jump. Revs pretty high and then back to od wich is a bit low.

it won't be 4th to 5th, it will be 4th to lockup. not a bad thing, just a pain.

Im not familiar with the term lockup. What does that mean. And yes its a pain. Can it be resolved?

torque converters are a fluid coupling. and lose about 10% of the engine's power to this.

Lockup occurs when the ECU deems there is minimal load on the drive line and locks the torque converter creating a mechanical drive between the crank shaft of the engine and the transmission. Thus reducing fluid friction to zero and increasing fuel economy.

It may be as simple as servicing the transmission(changing the fluid even) to remedy the situation if it is a recent development.

No, you can tweak the throttle position sender so the transmission changes gears slightly later, thus with the higher RPM it may force the transmission to be more decisive in its gear changes.
