Is there any easy way to check the turbo shaft play? I assume the turbo would need to be removed.

Might be time for a rebuild on the turbo. Check that the compressor wheel hasn't been rubbing on the housing otherwise it's worth changing it out. It would be good to see if the rings are ok so you don't waste time rebuilding the turbo for a dud engine...

Any oil in the intake after the turbo?
Slight up/down movement in an older turbo is pretty normal.
Like someone said, is the compressor wheel marking the housing?
Any in/out movement in the turbo shaft?
Its better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt.

One thing to try is removing the pcv hose from the air intake. It is connected at one end to usually the rocker cover, and on toymotas the other end is on the turbo. Mitsis I think go into the air intake pipework pre turbo. Usually on older diesels it is this vent pipe which can cause a bit of oil burn and blue smoke...especially on the 2.8/3.1 isuzu motors.
Anyway just take the air intake end off and poke it into a say 600ml plastic bottle. Poke some holes in the top for pressure release and see if you are collecting oil. Also make sure you block off the place you took it from (very important!). When you take the hose off you may notice some oil in there...if it's quite a bit that could be your answer.
I normally block off egr in all the vehicles I work on (pre carbon sensor ones) and put the pcv into a catch can. Increases longevity and stops the motor breathing its own farts lol :-D

If you opt for a new turbo be carefull with the chino ones...put one on my old diesel paj and only lasted 18months! Rebuilt genuine def a better option imho...

Well the kit arived last night so today I started pulling it off and bugger me if it didn't piss rain. All month we have been crying out for some weather in Queenstown and the one day I get uder the hood the hevens open. Any way I got half way and decided to reasemble and wait for my day off to do it properly. Its a vigger job than I had anticipated
