DIY Wheel Alignment

Post by eins »

Have SWB Safari and going to change Radius arm bushes and just wanted to check the wheel alignment after. Running 35inch Simex tyres mainly off road (although do drive to track as has WOF ) so given the tyres, type of tracks driven and the fact that only toe in/out can be adjusted, probably not worth the money to get put on alignment machine.

If I do it myself by measuring from the inside of rims or a mark on the tyre what should the correct setting be? Dead straight or toeing in a bit, if so by how much? Is that best method?

mark from the centre of the tyre at the back and front at or as close to hub height as you can get and give it about 5mm toe in, if you measure anywhere else you may not end up with the correct toe out at the tyre surface :D

edit... and the radius bush change wont have any affect on the toe in but you could end up with a caster change if you had offset bushes in it or if you change to offset bushes :D

The book says 3-6mm for the hilux, so that sounds about right.

Use a couple of rims with out tyres if you've got them,I find it easier to measure this way.

I put the truck on jack stands, remove wheels, and clamp a straight edge on to each hub against the WMS to measure from. I find that much more accurate than trying to measure against the tyres, but many have used the tyres without issue.
