The baldy's have got to go :(

The baldy's have got to go :(

Got up this morning, have a puncture, tyres are barely warrantable, so no point putting a tube in.

I'm after 4 mud terrain or aggressive A/T's I think I should be able to fit 31X10.5R15 on the standard rims of my 84 hilux surf. (think they're 15x7 rims?) If I am wrong please let me know. The rims are white 6 spoke steel rims.

It currently has 30X9.5R15 on the front and 235/75R15 on the rear. I do a bit of on road driving, so would prefer something with a bit harder compound. I definitely want tyres with good side lugs, or at the very least a tread block that goes out past the sidewall.

So please let me know what's the go, who to buy with, tyres or fitters to avoid etc, etc, etc.

And last but not least cheap, cheap, cheap :D

Mullet,
I put some 31x10.5x15 Sumitomo's on the Paj about 60k ago. Full MT and after them being run 95% or more of the time onroad they still have 7mm of tread (19 to start i think). They behave ok on the open road, (it's a SWB 4WD) and the Wife has not done any damage but changed the vehicle off road as AT tyres suck ass in grass and mud so for my money i would go MT every time, I paid $195 each 2 1/2 years ago and I think they are still around that.
Good Luck

If you want decent off-road performance, don't get an AT. Hankook or Maxxis mudders are reasonable cheap muddies you should get for under $200 ea for 31x10.5x15

Thanks for the info Pajfan and muddy :D

Priced up a few things yesterday. I find it ridiculous just how different the prices are these tyre places quote. Talked to two places, one said about $185ea another said $250-$350ea (both for 31X10.5XR15) for fark sake my mate will get his 35X12.5R15 tyres cheaper than that second quote.

Wot are they tryna pull?

Anyway, It seems my rims are only 15X6inches :( So I priced up some 15X7 rims while checking tyre prices. (the place that gave me the ridiculous quote for tyres also quoted more for the rims than I would pay for some 15X8)

Looks like I'd be looking at $50 a second hand rim.

So doing the math,

4X rims $200
4X tyres $740

total: $940

That seems like a ridiculous price to be paying for such tiny tyres. NOT HAPPY!

think I might forget the 31s and just put 30X9.5R15 on it. Before you suggest bigger tyres I don't have the lift to fit them (inverted shagged springs) and I don't think my 2.4 diesel would enjoy spinning the 33X12.5R15 tyres that I already have. (plus I'd need a cert. $350  )

So if anyone has some second hand 30X9.5R15 I'm interested and also if anyone knows where I will get the best deal on those tyres please let me know.

31x10.5x15 tyres should fit OK on 6in rims. Maybe a bit narrower than recommended, but it just makes them firmer on the beads & holds the sidewalls in so they should be better protected.

Pricing on different sizes is close because you don't need a hell of a lot more material to make a 35" versus a 31". Its only the side wall which is higher, and maybe the footprint slightly.
Sounds to me like 4wding aint gonna be a good past time for you until you are a little bit more financial.
4wds are the land going equivilent of boats, (if you are using them off road any way) except that they are a big hole in the air into which you pour money.
The other option is don't buy new tyres, get some second hand ones. :)
Ugly is a state of mind..... and the state of my truck!

Good call rok. mmmm more money would be nice. I should buy a sammy, but then I'd just want more power, bigger tyres etc.etc. $$$$$$$ just the same as with the surf :( hmmm the holy grail of offroading for cheap. has anyone really found it? Deranged maybe? Loving the dual gearboxes :D whooooa wayyyy off topic now.

Anyway I managed to get a couple of mud tyres (30X9.5R15) with bout 8mm tread for $45ea fitted :D :D :D :D

Sooooo much better than the other options. So I can make the xmas thing after all. :D

So if anyone out there with 2nd hand mud tyres in that size that you want to get rid of please let me know :D
