Post by Bubba »

Update on my many many problems.

Knocking noise was a lose hubb

Idler arm needs replacing, warrent issue, :(

CV boots needs replacing :(

something else I can't remember, bushes or something :?

brakes cables

brakes shoes :?

Both back bearings are stuffed, cheaper to just replace whole diff, also thinks my shocks might be stuffed as well (But the are OME, they not meant to be stuffed, EVER  )

Good news is I don't need to get new $40 brake shoes as there is some with the new $500 diff.

He is also doing it tomorrow so I can go on Saturday, he was even thinking about coming out with us and doing it at lunch time  But thought he would be ambushed by everyone else wanting repairs :P

Cheaper to replace the whole diff than do wheel bearings & brake shoes? If I was you I'd be learning how to swing a spanner, or changing my mechanic.

Wheel bearing kits can be got for $60-$100 per side, $20-$50 to get them pressed on & a hell of a lot less labour than changing a diff.

The OME gas shocks they sell for suzukis are total crap, they're just rebadged monroes, it only took me about 3 months to kill the set on the 'ol 413, & their warranty isn't worth jack.

Cheers

Gee thanks Clint, Doom Merchant. He called the wreakers while I was there and was quoted about $300 each side, then have them pressed off, then pressed back on, end up costing me more.

And yes I need to have a mid life career change, be a mechanic.

haha on my vitara

few months back:
fixed dents in all 4 guards
during trip - dented 3 of then and nice dent in ARB bar

for the last wof before the trip a month back:
I got 2 spare front axles as was worried about cv's
Replaced idler arm
Cut and installed coil spacers in front
Repaired dent in A pillar (ouch :( windscreen is a pain doing that)
Cut out both sills and welded RHS in
Front Wheel Bearing
Fixed handbrake
Think thats bout it.
during trip, killed handbreak, cv's started clicking, front brakes dodgy, overheating

For the trip we just did:
Handbrake
Radiator
Front Brake Pads
Bronze bushings in back of front hubs (causes play where cv enteres hub)
Pulled coil spacer out of front to drop it down a little
Made front sidebars
Changed both front axles for my spares (were starting to click)
during trip, weld on one of sidebars didn't hold up, broke front cv (which i'd only just put in), wouldn't get up to temperature (no thermostat i guess). handbrake dodgy again...

it is all worth it YES :D :D :D

Clint is right, you definately need to change your mechanic if he's ringing wreckers looking for wheel bearings! They come in new, or new. Chances are a 2nd hand diff is going to have nearly knackered bearings too. :(

If you could con a mate into helping/teaching you to do all that stuff, I recon theres about $3-400 of NEW parts in that list.

Andrew must be suggesting changing the diff for a reason, he knows the pointy end from the blunt end.....and he sorted out Mr O's Erupting Mt Zuki really quickly.....

....see if he can get a LSD one

My bad, on reflection I don't know who he called, unlikely it was the wreakers now i think about it.

Yes and it suks not being mechanicly minded, on very limited budget and into 4wding but I am learning.

I would agree with Jerry, Andrew is in the local club, comes with a good rep and was very good at pointing out the jobs that need doing, now, soon and in the future. He gave me heaps of options.

I think I need to quit my job and get a apprenticship with Turoa, as soon as he gets a full licence and leaves school

As a comparison my Diesel (Puegot) powerd Grand Vitara has munched thru (since I have had it) a $200 cambelt.....Suzuki only carry one in their Wanganui spares apparantly, $250 worth of Belts (that was for 3), Diesel filter is $80, and a $210 cambelt idler wheel which came via France/Japan)......
