National Park Safari 15/11/2006

Post by Moriarty »

Well, It looks like my turn to post the first pics.

Siw and I camped at the entrance to the park, in a modified version of DB's GQ campatruck. seems to be ok, we will just HAVE to do more of this camping lark!!

Brave girl, my sweetie!!! Mozzies and I both luv her to bits!!! Interesting patterns of bites on legs, bum, arms etc etc. She evinced a sincere amount of jealousy at mans ability to pee without exposing all the tender flesh to the insectavora of the outside world!!

All that aside, we spent the night out of the rain and rain it did!! Ohhhh the trout are as safe as houses in the Whakapapa stream. Bloody things.......

Was a great trip, arrived and met up at the Whakapapa Bridge behind Owhango, Phone call from Rolloverrover, first casualty, blown up his iol filter. Bugger!
Waited for the Sukis for about 20 mins and then they arrived and we was off.!! Good day, the "42" gave us great weather streams low and track unused enuff to be interesting.

a gazillion mountain bikers though!! fortunately, no Quads. They are a pest, thinking that they are the only ones using what is a popular track, never expecting to see anyone else and doing a million kph. Good fun to see how far their eyes pop out when they scream around a corner all hung out and see a large hungry grill!!

Sooooo 7 of us set off, played with narrow bits, damp bits, more narrow bits, Bosshoggs VX made certain tracks QUITE a bit wider too. good truck now.
anyway......
Here is the camp.......
Image

and we are off.........

Bosshogg had the first prob, hi-lo lever incorectly set after body lift.

Looked good Moriarty. Good timing on putting this thread up because Mike just suggested that we could do this on the way home from Tauranga after new year.

Sooooo, I just had a couple of questions for you. What is the track like in general? Are there any tricky bits where we would be likely to get stuck? When you say narrow... how narrow? Scratchy scratchy narrow? There seems to be a lot of plant overhang in your photos, does your truck come out looking like it's been rubbed down with a wire brush or do you just get a few superficial scratches.

Based on what you said about mountain bikers and quads I may have to get some big roo bars put on the Safari for that time of year!

The reason I ask about the scratchiness and whether we are likely to get stuck is because of the other vehicle(s) that would be accompanying us. Have to be a bit careful that we don't get ourselves bogged down in the whale when we only have a SWB Pajero to pull us out!

However, I'm not ruling out organising for other people to join us on the day, I'm just putting my plan together and will look at putting out an invite once we have sorted what we are doing.

Its a tight track, you may damage the standard flares if you are running the factory wheels still, and damage the runmning boards if you have them.

The track is essentially a good gravel road with a couple of tricky bits in it, such as the stream crossings and tight bits around slips.

You will get plenty of scratches, but nothing major. Although i did stove my drivers door in on a big log sticking out of the side of the track, but that was due to in-attention more than anything else.

We took a VX round with us, and i know a guy who dragged his high roof Safari round there. No bogs to get stuck in.

Wait for more pics to be posted!!!!

More on trip.....

On the 42 crossing, there is a lovely clean little stream called the Waione Stream, and one has to cross this and if you are Wopass, drive up and down it posing!

Image

Please note, the passenger DID open his door, but that was as far as HE got to getting out!!!

Image

Image

Siwsie took a couple of pics from the front seat too.

The exit is directly in front, but you can drive around the corner and take a left back to the track.

Image

Image
After the 42, we drove to the turnoff to Rangipo and brewed up. lunch wa served and eaten. SOME of us had strawberries, so bloody many of them,, they were beiong fed to a dawg!! Fat Sally Ridge(back)!!! I managed to get given ONE and snaffled another, obviously the dawg rates higher then a mere human in THAT household!!!

Next was a leisurly drive to the Waipakihi Road and river, with the weather slowly deteriorating the further round the mountain we got. the only ones to mind THAT state of affairs werte the ladies, but they soon stopped complaining as we plunged into the water and had a play.

Image

After this, I came home, as Siwsie had had a cell text demanding her presence at a meeting first thing Sunday AM.

Somebody else can take up the tale of the Sunday from here.

PS!!!!! I would like copies of the movies shot please, I wish to combine them with mine for future publication HERE!!!

Tyres........ BANG

Post by Moriarty »

We was NEARLY home, driving along the Marangai, and I said to Siwsie, I can hear a helicopter, sounds like a Huey!!!

Cant hear a thing, she replied. Not got my hearing aids in.

Poor darling cant smell a thing with her left ear and her right ear is half blind!!

Positive I can hear a chopper, I said again.

Listen!! Sure enuff, with care, she could hear the "VOP VOP VOP VOP" sound of a Huey.

Looked out the window, nothing. Sounds like it's driectly over head, why would it be pacing us at 100kph?

Then the penny dropped!! Fast i am, like a speeding bullet.

Stopped the truck, walked around, let the handbrake off, pushed the truck, feeling the tyres.

nothing.

Still, felt like a dead tyre. Drove home for the last ten K's at a more sedate pace, like 60 kph!!!!!

Sunday morn, time to change wheels back to road wheels.
Left front looked like THIS!!!!

New line in road sweeping....

Image

That damn Hospital did us a favour calling Siw back to work! I coulda been deep into the bush with a dead foot!! Or even better, miles up the Waipakihi river!! getting towed back in two wheel drive!!! WAHHHHHH now I need a half used 750x16 SAT

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Car-parts-accessories/Wheels-tyres/4x4/auction-82759350.htm

says new tread on it (may make it a little bigger) currently at $20
otherwise may be some use as a spare?

700 X 16 would only be a spare as the rest are 750s.

Nice thought, thanks.

Would MUCH prefer 750s, I know there are better tyres out there, but I dont have the room (yet) to swing bigger feet.

one day, perhaps, let me get a few more Ks on it first, dont forget, the damn things only a bit over a year old! Then flared guards etc.....

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Car-parts-accessories/Wheels-tyres/4x4/auction-85724471.htm

Set of 4 Firestone 7.50x16 SAT's on rims
4x Firestone 7.50x16 SAT (super all traction) tyres on steel 6x16 rims with 6 hole stud pattern to suit Landcruiser, Hilux, Pajero, Patrol etc...

3 tyres are fairly worn with 5-7mm tread depth remaining measured at 1/3 the width across the tyre. The 4th tyre is newer with approximately 12mm of tread. All will be retreads and are tubed.

Current bidding at $40...

may be worth it for a few spares??[/url]

Current bidding now $81

Thanks foir the thought, Ice, but Furgus and I have come to an arangement over 5 tyres. All I need now is to bully our local wrecker for a couple of STD Jap 6-Stud rims of near enuff offset.
Then I will be able to carry a spare offroad tyre.
Rolloverrover and I will now have enuff goodish tyres to be a menace again.
sooo Looks like I am sorted.
Appreciate all the help.
