Hello all,
Heres an interesting problem I need some help with. On saturday my mu (4jb1 t auto) blew a hose that ran from the thermostat to the heater at the back . It boiled, I let it cool down, filled it with water the drove the 5 mins home.
It was hot but running fine. I thought it might have been the head gasket so I tore everything off the top of the engine. I then found the rogue hose and replaced it today. Once I had put it all back together, I started it and it ran but it was rough. All 4 cyls though.
It would run ok at 1000rpm but given any more it would immediatley die . I didnt crack any injectors or diesel lines at any time. I thought it might be air, so I checked all the hoses etc, but to no avail. Now it wont even start. When it is turning over it starts to kick but wont actually start.
Any ideas why this thing wont go? Ive triple checked everything but somethings still wrong . Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
Blair

thanks for the replies. Firstly, Ive never had to use the glow plugs ever, not even in the harshest frost. It just starts. I didnt take the head off, got the inlet manifold undone but not off. Didnt touch the timing belt. Didnt touch any electrical connections that I know of, unless I bumped one, but have checked. I was unsure about the vacuum lines so my mate came round with a mu the same and we checked and they were all the same. aaaagggh.

possibly scored the bores when it was hot... which means you can kiss the motor goodbye... get a compression and leakdown test done...
Doesn't sound good - those engines are prone to overheating thru burst hoses (don't ask me how I know this... just another expensive lesson )

The motor ran when I put it back together but wouldnt rev, does this mean its really sick? How do I get a leakdown test done when the engine wont go and its stuck in my driveway? Is there a mobile guy?
Maybe time for a toyota V8....

The glow plugs are automatic... they 'glow' when you turn the key on and help ignite the diesel while the head is still cold... they also stay on for a preset time after the engine starts to help warm it up...
Yes you can have it checked without it running - they normally do it using only the starter to turn it over.
