Central Otago Waitangi weekend trip

Post by albundy »

I posted this up as an ORE club trip, but there has been a serious lack of interest. Anybody keen on a few days in Central.
Looking at running a trip to Central Otago on above dates. Tracks thinking of doing Serpentine, Old Man Range, Whitcombe Rd. Will stay in Roxburgh or Millers Flat I will look into accomodation soon.
Requirements:
Mud tyres, snorkel, rated recovery points, min 10 m rope/snatch. Would need to be prepared for extreme southerly weather incase of bad weather on top of Old Man Range= snow. Will keep details posted. Idea of numbers please for organising accomodation would be helpful. I will be heading down Friday afternoon and headng back tuesday.

Here is the link to Millers Flat motor Camp. I have booked my accomodation ( tourist flat) for the family. I have told them that people will book in the next few weeks, so get in there an do so as they say they have alot of fruit pickers around there then.

:) had to wait till I finished with the courts! all done now though, am being paid back slowly.

Should be ready though. Only thing I'm not sure about is the waterproofing.

Engines in and runs great, sumps has been adjusted, 100mm lift is just about done, radius arms go in to be bent tomorrow..

Just got to decide on tyres, do I go for 2nd hand creepies (5x) with 15x10's and mechanical beadlocks for $1500. Or buy new creepies and rims without the beadlocks.... hmmm... trial fit will happen tomorrow

Then theres the front and rear lockers...

You really don't need the beadlocks with Creepies on a Surf/Hilux/Prado Bill - they are one strong Mutha of a tyre. Can run mine down to 4PSI offroad without coming off rims (37x12.5x16 on 8" rims).

Cromcruiser's in, spoke with him last night. He and I have discussed a couple of tracks we want to point out noses down for a looksee while we are on top of the old man range. Reckon their will be about 4-5 trucks going from this. Hirilux could be in as well.

If I can get some time off for bad behaviour I may be keen to come.

Work already owes me that day off.

Sounds great, I could be keen for the mighty Niva's first trip...

Only it's broken its gearbox last week, and I'm have a bit of a job finding another locally. But should hopefully be well sorted by Waitangi weekend.

Just a couple of newb Qs:

-How deep is the water (I have a points style dizzy :( )?

-I trust tractor tyres are acceptable as muds?

-What's the minimum tyre height you'd recommend for the ruts, deep ruts about the only thing the Niva struggles with (though I'm half way through a lift kit)?

Cheers,

I got through there a few years ago on 31's. Are tractor tyres road legal as we will be travelling to and from the 4wd areas everyday. Water shouldn't be too deep, just don't hit them hard

Nah, I'd be pretty sure the tractors aren't remotely road legal. Mind you I could register the Niva as a farm vehicle for the weekend

Seriously though, my muds are about 27"/28" and work great, but anything like a deep rut is a problem. Unfortunately, almost all second-hand 31s are too wide for the poor old Niva.

Should have time to see what I can squeeze under it after doing a lift and some more gentle guard massaging though. Actually after I do the lift I it'll be worth getting my alignment so it doesn't chew tyres so badly, and maybe then not be so stingy and get some new tyres of the correct size... :)

Problems with accomodation in Millers Flat. No accomodation available friday night and only crappy caravans and campsites left for the rest of the time. Seen as my bro in law aint going now, I am going to book my accomodation in Roxburgh, there is a reasonable motel there, I will put up the details as I find them.

You got that right Frank. Monday sn't actually a hoday, but I've taken the day off to make a weekend.
I have looked at the thread and I realy only know of three trucks for sure, me, cromcruiser and Bill. If anyone else is a definite, pm me with your contact numbers and will give you a call. Don't think we will all be staying together, Bill in Queenstown, Cromy in Cromwell and I have tentatively booked a cottage on Coal Creek Rd. Plenty of motels in Roxburgh though and if the cottage falls through that will be my backstop. Might take you up on those tracks mudchucka as know Cromy and i would like to see something new

Was planning on driving down into paino flat and then back up. Also looking at accessing whitcombe rd via pomohakka rd and a small lake, know it. Not sure on the day, maybe the sunday, will know closer to the time, when my mate down there does a small recce of the tracks.
