Hi guys and gals
Can any one tell me my braked and unbraked towing capacity? I understand that this will depend on the tow ball and bar setup but I want to know the standard capacity for the vehicle. 1992 Granroad Y60 Nissan Safari LWB.
I know this vehicle has been used towing upwards of 3 tonnes in the past. We actually stopped at a fonterra weigh bridge when the truck and boat were fully loaded and the combined vehicle mass came to 5.8 tonnes. And we comfortably handled that for a good 100km trip many times without trouble. Just wondering what the book says.
cheers, Dylan.

Re: Towing Capacity
if you look up the nzta site the book says (or used to say) that the vehicles braked or unbraked maximum tow rating dosent apply, what does apply is you have to be able to stop in X distance at X speed. If your towing on a car licence you cant exceed the maximum weight for that class (still 5000kg I think) so your probably breeching your licence class at 5800kg if you don't have a HT endorsement

Re: Towing Capacity
your allowed up to 6 ton combined gross weight on a car license.
Re: Towing Capacity
Used to be a limit of 4.5 tonne on a car licence, I did the right thing, paid $1000 to get my class 2 licence & they changed the rules about a month later

Re: Towing Capacity
arg good timing to get the license then aye haha. The 4500kg GCM limit only applies to learner and restricted class 1 licenses.
Re: Towing Capacity
Safs came out with either 2.5t tow hitches, or 3.5t.
I'm still trying to work out why myself, as I dont think even the 3.5t had leaf sprung rears, and they seem to be mostly the automatics. Weird.

i think that used to be the case when it was 4500kg limit. looks like they have done away with that when they upped it to 6000kg.Mudde1 wrote:Only if it is a Motorhome or a trade vehicle. Officially the GQ Nissan Patrol/Safari can only tow 2500kgs braked.
Nissan towing weights
These towing weights are sourced from the New Vehicle Distributor’s spec sheets. They’re based on vehicles sold new in NZ - spec levels and recommendations may vary with used imports.
Patrol - all 1986 - 1999 750kgs unbraked 2500kgs braked.

but they are only recommendations not legal requirements.Ralfie wrote:
