probably adds a couple of hours the trip Blenheim to chch - depends upon stops etc
better north to south
seems endless going sth to nth
Main St - Blenheim to the Square Chch is 309km
via Molesworth it is 336km
of which 189km from SH1/Awatere Valley Rd to Lewis Pass Rd
So instead of 309km at 85kmh - say 3.6hr
you will have
147km at 85kmh and 189km at 50kmh = 5hrs 30minutes

I did the trip North to South on 2nd Jan. It was LONG! I couldnt wait to get off the dam road ay. Not a bad road, suitable for Jap cars though.
50km speed limit for a LOT of it, but I somewhat didnt obey that.
If it was a nice day (that day was wet) it wouldnt have been so bad.
For me, Im glad I have done it, but wont be going back.
Hope that gives you a insight.
I think it would be a long way to take young kids.

We did it a couple of years ago, but stopped at both ends of the run to observe the old buildings and also 1/2 way in for a picnic lunch. The scenery is not that bad, although it is barren in places. Plenty to look at including a couple of old swing bridges just off the road.
Was told some stories from a couple of old chaps we met on the way about the hills moving with rabbits. Turns out these chaps were from the days of mustering sheep 50 plus years ago. One was a musterer and the other was the cook!

Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.
