What is this squishy foam?

Post by fh2014 »

So work has begun on the kzn185 I got with a 3.0 diesel in it. Under the hood, oil f*kn everywhere . So far it's been rocker gasket and cracked turbine housing. Cleaning from the top down i find what looks like oily foam running around the sump- is this some kind of expanding foam gasket? Or something worse?

I noticed the same thing on mine when doing cambelt in weekend.

It is definitely some sort of foam put there for some reason I don't know why it's there but I thought it was something nasty happening at first too.

For both of us to have it guessing it's there from factory.

on the 1kzte there can be a block of foam between the sump and trans blanking plate at the bottom of the bell housing. Over time it gets full of oil and stuff ... Mine fell apart doing a trans removal 10 years ago... Never bothered to replace it. Only seems to fill the gap... Possibly to prevent stuff getting in that area.. I wheel mine in all sorts of crap and mud.... No issues not having it...

I see that on a lot of diesels, I assume that it's for noise reduction.
