Centarl Otago Waitangi trip

Post by albundy »

What an awesome trip. Fine weather, new tracks, pushing of comfort zones, a few recoveries, good beer and good company.
Started saturday at 0900, Tim from Dunedin joined us. Headed up Coal Creek rd to the pinic table gate. From there we headed down near some cattle yards into a steep valley ending up at some huts in good nick. Worked out we were actually slightly lost as this was not where we thought we would be. Headed back out the valley to our start point and found where we wanted to go. Thought I had lost my clutch at this stage as I was throttling away but not going anywhere. Wasn't in 4wd and just spinning on the wet grass
We then bnasically spent the rest of the day doing a loop around the hills and through the Pomohaka river coming out at Junction hut. There was some difficult steerp terrain and I even had to use the winch to haul myself out of the river back onto dry land. Back to the motel for a feed and beers.
Sunday we went up Waikawa bush rd to Potters. Noticed my fuel gauge going down all to fast and discovered that the fuel filler had come off at the tank end when I pushed the articulation through a hole just near Potters. Fixed that and had a brew. We then headed down towards the Whitcombe Rd and found a late model Mazada Bounty in the middle of a bog-abandoned  I will post this photo in another thread I will start up about the dangers of WANNABIE'S  After pulling this truck out so we could get through, we worked our way down the Whitcombe. For those that know this rd, it is getting really detoriated down the bottom just before christies hut(whats left of it). Had lunch and headed back up. We then turned off whitcombe to a track that linked us back to Junction hut. Went through some good swammpy bits and this was the day we all needed recovering at some stage.
Monday saw only two trucks as Tim had to go back to Dunedin for work. We again went up Waikawa bush rd, turning up the hill at the hut so we could track over to the Old woman range. We scouted around looking for new tracks, but to no avail. We went up the staircase, this is getting really easy now, and to a detour from the normal route. We had the scent of a new track in our noses and we found what we were looking for. We have found a way from Roxburgh to the Nevis Valley, but the track is dangerous in parts and we will have to get permission for a future trip, which is all ready in the planning
All in all a great trip, good weather and new land found and explored. Tracks up there are getting easier but idiots still go up there unprepared( keep a lookout for the Wannabei thread). Truck went well and lockers do have downfalls.
