The best place for the function of an aerial mount is centre of roof or bonnet, however it probably wont stay there long.

I mounted mine on the ARB bar, its a flexi one so it tends to move back when trees etc push against it. Had no problems with operation there

Dont think that should be a problem, why are you going to CB rather than PRS which most clubs are using now?

PRS is a Cb, its just Fm, not am. People still call them Cb.

Best place to mount ariel is somewhere with a good solid ground plan, (metal base)

Mounting to a steel bar is better than mounting to let say plastic, but its still not as good as mountng to a gaurd, or flat area of metal.

Ive got mine opposite my car radio ariel. Its been bent once, but I just straightened it up.

Also mounting it to a wheel rack etc can also shelter the ariel. This in turn will also shorten the range.

(18km will only be clear line of sight, in valleys etc, Im sure you'll still only get several hundred meters, which is to be expected)

i have mine mounted close to center hoop on my bullbar and it has a spring addaptor on it so it can be bent back so far it can lay flat on the bonnet......no worries for breakages

Just mount it where it suits you, rear tyre carrier or what have you. It will still work, even if the range may be affected a little.

As for experience, I have a scanner aerial on the front guard of the truck, and one on the fiberglass roof of the carport (for when I take it in the shed when working in there) and the shed aerial works better, go figure!

I would however suggest you get a spring base for it, available from DSE etc.
Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.

It should realy be mounted in a pisition where it can get a good ground plane effect .
But in saying that the best place is middle of your roof totaly usless for our type of use main thing to rember is if mounted at the rear all or most of your signal strength wil be going out the front of your 4x4 and the reverse for front mounting it is realy a matter of its up to you and of cause some where so it wont get broke off to easy you could make up a DDRR antina and it would only b around 50 mm off your roof ? food for thought
