Toyota surf lift parts wanted

Post by noobsurf »

Hey i have an 1990 ln130 hilux surf.

I am wanting to get my surf a lift so i can get into a bit of offroad driving an i am after some front and rear shocks and some springs also. Would also love to get hold of some decent m/t or a/t tyres and any other bits that i may need. Just new to this and would appreciate any help at all. any parts that you are willing to let go of that will help let me know.

Cheers

Nick

I have the same truck but with the 3L v6 petrol engine and have been doing it up over the last year. a good start is a two inch suspension lift. there isnt much point going higher than this on the surfs as you wont get more than 2 inches out of the front ifs suspension. you should be able to pick up some rear springs for around $200 and you can wind up the front tortion bars for free! look in the toyota tech section there are good explanations from about how to do both of these modifications. as for shocks i would just go for standard length after market shock in the front. in the back with the suspension lift you can put in longer shocks to gain more articulation and keep the wheels on the ground and keep you moving forward. the shocks out of the front of a 60 series landcruiser are go straight in and are as long as you would want to go with standard shock mounts (too long and they bottom out when the wheel travels up and you will stuff the shock). I went for the cheapest option i could with munrow adventurer shocks. i have found them very good, however i think that the rear shocks are abit stiff on the road as the front of a cruiser is alot heavier than the back of a surf. when you fit longer shocks it is also good to remove the rear sway bar to allow the rear shocks to fully extend.

with these suspension mods you should be able to fit 32 inch tyres though if you use the standard rims you will probably get some rubbing. to over come this you will need rims that stick out abit more. i used after market 15x8 inch rims with the standard hilux solid axel offset and some rubber flares to cover them where they stick out past the side for the truck.

next i would fit a snorkel so that you can go through deeper water without stuffing your engine. airflow are cheap for about $300
got mine from 4wd accessories.

I have just recently got lokka automatic diff locks and think that they are one of the best mods you can do. they would be next on my list. you get them for arround 600 each but they will end up costing you a little more for installation cost (both if you do it yourself or if you pay someone)

the only other mod that i have done is a body lift to accomodate 33 inch tyres. i think i couldfit 35s on but 33s are as big as i would go on a surf because of power issues and strength of the front dive line. once you have done a bodylift i would definately look at getting a cert that will cos about $350

there are lost of other things you can do like bulbars and a winch. next on my list is a low profile gearbox crossmember to get a wee bit more clearance.

oh and for got to say to start with get yourself some good tow hooks.

this is what i have done and my opinions. im sure other people will have more info to give you.

good luck
have fun

Pete has pretty much nailed it.

Larger tyres and a body lift will require a cert so that's something to think about.

The OME suspension kits are pretty good, rear springs and shocks are a good match and front torsion bars can be adjusted and a large range of shocks are available for the front. I am also running cheap Monroe's on the front.

A huge range of tyres are available, most people with stock front ends don't seem to go above 32in. An auto locker in the front will make it last a bit longer.
