Waipara River - Help please

Post by 4x4boy »

Some of the fellas from my Church are organising a 4wd / motorbikes trip for this Saturday (31st March) to go to the Waipara River. Most of these guys are inexperienced but keen for a 'blokes' day at the river.

I was hoping that some of you guys might be willing to share some of your 4wd expertise and knowledge with them and help out by spreading a few of you through a small convoy of vehicles and helping out and offering guidance where needed for the day.

Not sure of the details at this stage but a sausage sizzle style lunch will be provided free of charge.

Please let me know if anyone is interested in helping out. Either PM me or call or add to this thread.

Thanks guys  8)

I will put my hand up to help out, but no praying for my soul  I sold it years ago  The river is really easy at the moment, went from stringers to the highway in two whell drive last sunday, but I still know of some big holes we could go through.

I diddnt see you there Al, we did it too. Found an old willow tree trunk well alight just below Stringers Bridge where the power pylons cross the river, wasnt you was it? lol

As you say the river is a doddle at the moment, with the occasional soft spot that will catch the unwary out, but suitable for shineys.

May be able to assist, but no promices at the moment.
Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.

I was there on sunup as I couldn't sleep. Saw that fire and poured water all over it, it was fairly raging when I found it, took all the beer bottles away as well, notice all the cartridges, hunters/louts probably.

It will probably smoulder till it burns out, underneath the log was hot as hell, 6 of us also poured water on it.

Yeah there were fresh shells all over the show, and shooters nearby as we heard the shooting. Must have gone through a shitload of shells too as I saw 3 empty boxes in about a 1k stretch!

Thanks Al. We are meeting at Grace Vineyard Church (150 Ferry Rd) at 8.30am and heading out from there. I can make another point to catch up if that is too far away. At this stage it looks like we are going in at Stringers bridge and coming out as far downstream as we can manage timewise. I thimk planning to finish about mid afternoon.

Cheers Matt

I'll try to resist the urge to beat the Demons out of you. lol

Hi Guys
The Waipara River is being damaged by uncaring users. Please refer to my thread under "Canterbury Water & River Issues"
Basically this River System needs to be used with care & respect especially with trial bikes & quads.
Basic commonsense approach is keep to the river bed keep of private land, (That is basically land above the high flood mark)
At the Gorge end extreme care is needed as the river is low and it is easily polluted and damaged so cross only as you need to. For trial bikes I would suggest keep down stream of Stringers Bridge.

Thanks for the info Paul. I will pass it on to all of the trucks. Don't want to upset things too much eh.

021 925114 or 9421373. Easier on the home phone until I head away on sat mornng. Leaving here about 8 for a coffee with Rik.
As for the senstivity of the area, I thought it best to head down from stringers to the coast, and I was going to give them the lecture about staying away from the horseshoe anyway. It,s better gong around the horseshoe as it is really soft and can really test both driving and recovery skills.

Turn left at the first dairy in Amberly, follow the road for a while , it veres rght the left, Turn right at the sign that says Stringes Bridge. Follow that down, cross the bridge, turn right gate on right open ( and close) then head down into river. When there is a good water flow, this entry/exit can be quite fun.

Hey guys, sorry, but due to management at my work being crap, and the whole place being a joke, I now have to travel to work over on the coast tomorrow, so I wont be able to make it unfortunately.

On the bright side of going tomorrow, seeing as though I havent had a day off between shifts, I will be having wed and thursday added to my easter! ;-)

All the best.
