Help on Rules and Regs for fun/club/comp events 4x4

Post by mudrat »

Hiya,

I am looking at getting a 4x4 hack, rusty panels but good chassis, to cart stuff around our paddocks, preferably an SJ Suzuki (would fit my trailer) or maybe an old Hilux.
I would also like to use it for 4x4 tracks, fun/club events, and later on a few competitions.
I don't plan on having it road reg'd.

Can anyone here help me with info/links on the requirements for a 4x4 using public tracks and entering fun/club events (rollcage, belts, etc.)?

Can anyone recommend a 4x4 club in/around Hamilton?

..and does anyone have any information on the requirements for 4x4's entering competition events such as winch challenges, mud plugs, etc?

thanks,
Ben

Winch Challenges

Post by Kent »

I'm pretty sure for most winch challenges you will need at lest a roll bar and 4 pt harnesses. For club stuff, the thing is sometimes these events work around different tracks and travel on roads or do one way trips thru tracks and then travel back by road, and having a non road legal truck would not really work for these sort of things unless you have someone who will drive the trailer to the other end. But of course if you want it more for doing stuff offroad and you are happy to trailer it round and miss out on an event here or there then it is a whole lot cheaper to not have to worry about having it road legal.

The club trips I go on, require Wof, Rego & third party insurance. If you're travelling on public tracks then you will need wof & reg...

I club trips I've been on ask that your wagon is road legal, but at the end of the day they never seem to care :?

Thanks to everyone for the info.

Looks like I was off track in my thinking, maybe something with a little less rust :)

Also looks like I'm looking for a toyota of some sort, due to the availability of parts.

Tomsoffroad - Due to your extensive mods are you going to cert., wof, and reg your Surf?

Cheers,
Ben

Sure am. I've got a couple of minor gremlins to sort out first am I might give it a coat of jam. Should be legal by end of year. (fingers crossed)

Gidday

For winch comp's you will need WOF, REG and any mods certed. For most club events you need the same.
If you are on a "public" track same applys.
For a full list of winch rules check out the AK 4x4 club, dennys page.
