Garmin Quest - cheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep

Post by BrentC »

I see that DSE have them on special for $398 save $400

push to go there

I assume that they have the ver2 NZ City Navigator installed - not that that should be a problem - the ver3 map has the same errors and is dated about October 2006 - still very usefull - if you buy one - set map detail to most.

I have had a quest2 for ages - they are great GPS's - very versatile - good size for taking away overseas etc.

If anyone is going to the USA - I have some left over garmin US City Navigator DVDs in stock :D

Topo for 4wding also available

How do these compare to say a Garmin 60 series for off roading?

Cheers

Probably better - the 60 is designed more for walking - however the 60cx - with the new sirf chip gets much better reception under leaf cover - not that that is particuarly relevant 4wding - from memory the quest has an external aerial socket that would even it up.

I like an in car GPS to talk to me - so that I don't have to look to see which way to turn when auto-routing.

personally I use a 276C and an M5 when 4wding - bigger screens for older eyes

Spotted that as well....have got a Navman in the Zuk which is pretty nice on the road, not really suitable offroad as its setup for road warriers.

Whats this one like http://www.dse.co.nz/cgi-bin/dse.storef ... View/D9059 and which ones can be used with the free NZ gps maps http://gwprojects.org/forum/index.php

am after one that can track progress etc...the one Cloggy uses looks good...whatever model that is

The legendCx ?

You would be better off with the Quest

I bought a couple for the kids awhile ago - never liked them - the 60csx or 76csx is better.

Sorry for the dumbass question....does the Quest still have the route mapping / recording and waypoint marking ability?

I got the Garmin 76csx and have uploaded the routable version of the NZ open GPS maps onto it. I didn't use MapSource as I couldn't figure out how, but there is another tool that they recommended (can't think what it's called right now) that uploaded it no worries. These maps contain all the public roads, place names, etc.

As for Cloggy's offroad maps, I don't think he has actually created any maps as such (yet - he plans to I believe), but you can upload previous tracklogs to it. That reminds me, I need to get together with Cloggy and create a map of Rallywoods from my tracklogs of QBW.

Has the GPS actually seen the satellites here in NZ? Does the satellite strength page show at least 3 solid bars?

If not, leave it with a clear sky view for at least 10 -20 minutes. If this is the case you can speed up this process by selecting New Location on the Satellite Menu page.

on the navman you get an option to set a location as "my home" , this is the start page from then on. might be worth a try

So what was the problem / answer
There is no mechanical problem so difficult that it cannot be solved by brute strength and ignorance.
