Get a hold of ken Sibly's 4wd touring books, they are out of print but you can get them at your local library. I go in to serpentine and long valley ridge rd from old dunstan rd. I usually come over Dansey's pass to Ranfurly. Long valley turns left off Old dunstan rd before poolburn dam. Long valley will take you through to the church. You can then either turn left to take you out the top end of serpentine or turn righ to take you out the bottom end over to lake onslow. You can come off the plains either at millers flat or the back of roxburgh. There are several ways up old man range, waikawa bush rd, coalcreek rd and not sure of the other one, starts with "p", pomohaka or something like that. If you have not been up old man range before, take good maps or gps as the cloud cover can come in quick and if you aren't familiar with the area you will get lost easily. And remember, stick to the tracks as it is a very sensitive area, my favourite 4wd area and I would hate to see it locked up. Last time up there we found and abandoned vehicle some idito decided to go up in and had no idea what he was in for. If you are planning this for when the tracks open I would be keen for a drive through there in the snow.
