Changing Oils

I'm (as my name suggests) pretty new to this and I want to change the oils in my truck.
I can do the engine oil no probs, done that plenty of times but how do you change the oil in the and gear box?
I've been under and had a look and I can see where you drain it but how do you poor the oil in the fill hole?
I'm presuming I can find which oils to use in the books at say supercheap/repco etc?

to fill the g/box you can use a long bit of hose and a funnel or a hand pump to do the job

ya cant beat a bit of gravity even if there is a little bit of spilt oil

Turns out its a lot easier if you get gravity on your side and just tilt the truck a bit sideways, say by driving it up the side of the deck.

This would make the gearbox extreeeeeemly overfull.... unless you rolled it down to check it level while filling then I'll shut up

the small 1 litre oil bottles have a pop up spout that can be bent into the fill hole and most (larger) trucks should have enough space under there to get the bottle above the hole. Can only do a litre at a time though so back and forth.

Cheers for that guys, I've got er sussed now. Got an old 3lt hand pump from the father in law, works sahweeet. Not much help this time but at least it'll be easier next time.

Theres a question, how often do you change the oils in the diff and gear box?

I have an auto, so once a year air filter, both diffs, auto fluid and filter, transfer case and power steering. This is of course I haven't recently gone through deep water crossing (in which case, immediately after change the oils).

Engine oil and filter is 5000 kms or 4 months, whichever comes first. Same for tyre rotation and greasing all the joints.

This is probably an overkill, but oils and grease is cheaper than parts to replace.

O guess I should do the tire rotation too, whats the deal with tyre rotation, is it Rear Left goes to Front Left or do you cross them over ie, Rear Left to Front Right ?

I should do the greasing too, but for now I've gotta find whats the deal with the bloody great grease leak behind my front wheels!

I have been doing a 5 tyre rotation as recommended by the installers. Spare --> RR --> LF --> RF --> LR --> Spare

I have done 40k kms and tyres are only half worn (BFG Muds). Rotation is critical on a SWB or else tyres get chewed up fast.

Greasing is good as it flushes out all the gunk in there. I have a grease gun and just do it while the oil is draining. Take a couple of minutes. I have 13 grease points to look after.

25k-50k, it varies some manuals now have 'lifetime' oils which last for years....

I change my auto fluid every 10'000km and a flush every 40,000km, new filter will be put in at 80'000km. Its shorter that the normal service intervals, but its a cheap way of making it last....

Unless you have directionals: front to rear on the same sides.
