Tyres and rims for 70 series

Vehicle: SWB '91 70 series Prado LJ71

Currently its fitted with 245x75 16's on original alloy 6" wide rims.

I want to fit some BIGGER MT's but also want to leave it at standard height.

What are a good tyre and rim combination for this vehicle. While still keeping it standard and WOF'able?

I have a KZJ-71 Prado of '93 vintage at standard height and run that on BFG 31 x 10.5 x 15 MT's.

I have two sets of 8" wide alloys with a big offset, -29 from memory. They were off a wide-bodied Nissan safari.
However my '71 has the fragile and expensive glass flares so it runs the wide offset easily. Luckily your truck won’t have those but some rubber flaring or garden edging will do the job better.

I am told that 33 x 12.5's will fit under the standard height suspension though I have not seen this myself.

A friend, Paul Delis who modded the first two serious 78 series Prados in the South Island swears by the factory 7" alloy rims for his 33 x 12.5 feet. He reckons that they give the beads more side pressure and allow for lower tire pressures before de-beading occurs. I think he is still using these 7" rims for the 35's that he runs now. His truck runs the 4" lift Chamberlain springs that he designed and most people off-roading these Prados use.

Kaney on here used to run a LJ78 on 33's. I think the 2.4 T handled them OK. It too had the 4 " Chamberlain springs.

I have heard of both 3" and 2" spring lifts as well and will probably get the latter at some stage. My truck does not articulate that well but the two diff-locks kinda make up for that and I like to corner relatively fast on the open road.

yes 33x 12.5x 15 will fit under standard suspension on the kzj78, because I have been, but the 2.4 will stuggle to turn them in the hard stuff, low not low enough, well my 3l has trouble but is maual, hit somethings a bit fast, not good for cv's

yea as icedjonno said...i used to run a 92 prado, with the 100mm lift. it went well (considering it had a 2lt) but it went even better when i put in a different transfercase (swb 73 series i think :scratch:) down geared it heaps, -on the speedo with 33s i had to sit on a reading of 112 to be doing 100(GPS). but yes it will run them easyish but does strain the motor in mud.

My brother has a '90 Safari fitted with 31x10.5.15's muds on 7" rims. I tried these on the cruiser and they look great, the offset was practically perfect, but unfortunantly the rim didn't clear the brake calipers effectively. So I'm trying the track down what the offset of these Safari rims are so I can hopefully find something that will fit as nicely.

I run 33x10.5 muds on factory 15" rims on standard suspension on my KZJ78 (LWB 3.0l TD). Fills the guards up but I get no rub. The 33x12.5 I tried (on different rims - don't know offset) rubbed on suspension arm when on steering lock - couldn't use last 3/4 turn of steering wheel, which was a problem on the LWB. I would get 12.5s next time just for wider footprint, just different offset.

I have heard that 16" tyres are more expensive as 15" rims are so common.
