2L-T Oil Issues

Post by smurf182 »

Recieved this PM from member hoddy2000, will direct him to this thread.

Can somebody tell me whats gone wrong.
I have a Surf 91 model 2lt turbo diesel 2.4 and she had problems which everyone here in zim said was a faulty ECU but in the end turned out to be a cracked vacume pipe from turbo inlet to exhaust gate but since then she has started to burn excessive oil when idleing and low revs up to 2000 rpm when she suddenly burns clean and if you rev to 2000 ie in first no oil only when it drops below 2000 then clouds of blue (oil)smoke.....whats gone wrong and how do i fix it here in Zimbabwe

Ok I'm guessing the vacuum hose in question is actually the wastegate actuator boost line. When this is disconnected or develops a serious leak you effectively have no wastegate and therefor unlimited boost.

Given your symptoms, my first thought would be you need a turbo rebuild, other members here will be able to help you better. A bit more info on the engine and it's history would probably help.

tell him that Toyota NZ has hundereds of replacement 2L-T motors sitting on pallets in their warehouse ready to go.

That should explain what big piles of crap those motors are.

Sorry if this is not helping, but its the honest truth, and besides, they sound better with a screaming six or a 1UZ under the hood.

Agreed, but I suspect Supras, Soarers and the like may be thin on the ground in that part of the world.

Yes it does sound like the turbo needs rebuilt. I suspect there is probibly also a lot of oil in the turbo to the engine intake pipe remove that and clean it (Inside) and see how fast oil comes back, and if the smoke goes when clean and returns when the oil comes back it is the turbo.

To me I would be suspect the turbo is pushing oil through the intake and the turbo seals are gone (the source of oil)

How much oil is the Motor using?
How many KM?
How often is the oil changed?
Does it feel normal to drive?(for a 2lt) Better than most? or is it a slug?(compared to other 2lt's)

I think we need some more info as the distance and diagnosis could be off, it could be a cracked head both these issues are common.

For the turbo you will need to take it off and see if there is any movement in the turbine shaft (Up down left right in and out) this run's on a couple of brass bushes if there is an engineering shop you may be able to get these made or buy them from Toyota in South Africa or Dubai. it doesn't take much movement to allow oil into the intake or exhaust.

If it is OK then you will need to remove the head and look for cracks, you will probibly find a few these could be welded at an engineers but here it would be a replacement head, cracks always seem to grow.

Good luck
