i have an ongoing problem with my alternator, it seems to charge fine for a few weeks or months. then park it up one night and it wont start the next day. when this happens the lights for the t.belt, fule and radiator all come on
and it wont charge for a few weeks,

(i get by charging it up a night.)
its the third time now and im over it so..
im told by some its the alternator and bad wires by others.
whats you thoughts.

When it's playing up if you disconnect the alternator belt this will tell you if its the alternator or something else causing the problem. If the lights stay on then it's not the alternator.

Does it overheat at all when it's like this?

Is it an '89 Bighorn ??
I have had the lights come up on mine a couple of times but then they go out after 30 sec pr so ...
A friend of mine has the same truck and had the problem that you have ... I will ask him what it was ... watch this space ...

Check the blue relay in the fusebox under the hood... when its not working, try giving it a few good whacks with a blunt instrument and see if it pops back to life - its a common fault in Isuzus...

If it is the relay I think from memory a new one is around $35 from an autosparky...

took the relay to a sparky and he asured me that it was fine and that the alternator was to blame.
yes it is a 89 bighorn and it has overheated once, but that was my fault and not at the same time as this problem,
i started to pull it apart under the bonnet, has anyone removed one from this model? the aircon is in the way, is it safe to take that out of the way or do you loose the gasssssss.
ps if you have one for a 89 2.8 tdi yell out,
oh and i need a windscreen too :roll:

you can also disconnect the wires from the back of the alternator and just use the battery charger to keep it charged and see if that run's for longer.

when the truck starts and runs you should be able to see what voltage the car is running at if it is 12V or less when running then suspect the alternator if it is 14V or more then something else. I cant help any more than that.

Steve mentioned the relay as a common issue if it gets stuck it will be a continuous power draw and flatten the battery and could be intermittent for $35 and a quick fix I think it would be worth the chance.

Aircon is pressurised. A frigie can reclaim the charge if it needs to come out. Can bite you if you're unlucky enough to get a shot of it in your eyes etc... Probably looking at around the $100 smackaroonies to get it out and put it back later.
