7mge overheating dramas
Righto all you diagnostic whizz kids my 7mge/hilux is giving me greif from running hot. I am aware that they are prone to blowing head gaskets but I have done the tee kay exhaust gas check on the radiator and passed that test. The thermostat has been replaced radiator core cleaned before installation, electric fans running properly waterpump workin fine radiator fins not blocked so system seems in workin order.

any suggestions

One thing to look out for is airlocks. Where is the pressure cap? If the height of the cap is below the top of the radiator, you can get an air lock. It wont use a drop of water, but does mean you dont get effective cooling over the whole radiator.
This is a common problem when a bodylift/engine swap is done. If the cap is lower, look at moving your radiator until it is below the level of the cap

Remember to throw the heater on once up to temp I have seen an airlock in the heater cause silly air burping issues.
the other thing is at low speed and climbing you are in the worst conditions for cooling it could be the radiator is too small for the summer temps and the engine swap.
I have also seen the hoses to and from the engine narrowed and hard with a whole lot of crap on the inner walls of them.
Good luck.

heater? whats that,
It is hard to figure out because it has never given me trouble yet all of a sudden it starts running hot for no apparent reason

MATT4U wrote:I had cooling probs with me 5m untill i put a shroud on it, just a flat sheet of alloy infront of the radiator with a hole the size of me fan and the fan strapped to it. works wonders now
how the hell does that work Matt? you need to add a little more info!
alloy with a hole in it the size of the fan bolted to the front of the radiator, this is a push system you are running with the fan in front of the radiator pressureising the shroud!
I would have thought a push system would have been better without a shroud except for around the fan, is your fan running all the time? do you know the CFM of the fan?
Just trying to get it to be read better.

I have the same setup as Matt, look here
works perfectly, (70 deg all day)16" fan of trademe, dunno what it flows, but it hardly ever turns on on the open road, and temp stay at 80 deg up hills, and 4wd'ing
PS rad is a 2.4 diesel recored

not sure that the fan is the issue as it has not given trouble to date, the radiator is a 4 core from a toyota dyna 13bt motor(3400cc turbo diesel) and previously cooled engine to 60deg around town without fan on

wats the core like? is it a mud brick? my truck used to over heat so i took ma rad to work and steam cleaned the core, in the end i ended up recorin mine wit a custom core i built at work works like a treat now
if the core is not a mud brick i wood take it to a radiator shop get the header tank pulled off and get a internal clean its amazin how many blocked tubes there can be, some rad,s come thru work half blocked

Re: 7mge overheating dramas
Hi, I have just taken my radiator out, as i have had exactly the same heating problem on my 7mge lux.
I have no idea what to fit, as the radiator man in Stellenbosch said my old 2.4dtoy radiator is "moeg".
I use to run a push and pull fan.. Has anyone mastered this heating problem in the past? I am open for ideas.
The guy suggested a kb280 2core alluminium radiator as i have limited space. is it any good?

Re: 7mge overheating dramas
as stated above, the standard 2.4 turbo deisel rad with a shroud and decent fan should do teh trick
Re: 7mge overheating dramas
The ste up I run now seems to work but im not using a 2.4d radiator, I have one out of a dyna truck with a 16in push fan on front and the ali shroud around.
