FJ40 fuel tank up2 a V8 anyone?

Post by petefj40 »

I wonder if there is anyone else running a thirsty V8 in there 40 having the same problem as me.
I've had my V8 40 dyno tuned. But having it tuned stationary on the dyno isn't simulating how it runs on the road. The guy tuning it Kevin Geary is happy to tune it but tuning a LS1 behind a FJ40 drive train is new to him. (to anyone I would imagine)
The problem I'm having is getting enough fuel up to the engine. And what I think is happening is the petrol cap isn't letting enough air into the tank (as it's a breathable one) there for creating a vacuum, reducing the flow to the engine.
I'm thinking of making a breather for the tank.

Has anyone else running a V8 in there 40 had a similar problem?

Yep, had to run a 5mm vent off the fiiller on the inside of the cab. Just tucked it behind the seatbelt piller. Just make sure it is a one way valve. Although in rough ground you will get a bit of vapour in the cab......
That or drill a 5mm hole through the cap (works well unless on extreme angles!! )
P.S was running a 400 chev with a 750 double pumper, manuel secondies, 450bhp on the dyno at 5000rpm. Ain't it great too be able to do 4 wheel burnouts?? :D :D :D

Ahh. Cheers for that. Before I replaced the original fuel cap with the breathable one I had major problems. I did a run from Christchurch to Nelson once. Half way through the Lewis pass it stopped running. When i pulled over there was no one around, quiet as. I wondered, why did it stall? When all I could hear was a bubbling sound coming from the petrol tank. When I opened the petrol cap there was this MASSIVE suction! The penny dropped.
I will have to put a breather on the tank after all.

P.S after blowing up the last rear diff trying to do burnouts I've toned it down some. :D

Same thing happened to me over Lewis Pass. I wasn't quite so lucky, the fuel cap got sucked in and came apart   .
Had to take the tank and filler etc out and remove the pieces. Then got a new cap and drilled the hole through it. Although I got a twist cap( previous one was a key lock ).

Wow. Sounds like your 400 V8 has more bhp than mine! I mean, sucking the cap to bits!!
Awesome! I'd love to see some youtube or pix of it.

None sorry, too much time down in behind the Moorehouse Ave over the bridge .
Although if you want conformation about the need for a v8, just ask anyone who has seen my drive my whale or toymotor( and my reason for a 'Works Licence' !! )

I just had this 3 inch "Di Filippo" system installed on my Clubsport last week. One of the first in the South Island my mechanic tells me. $3.500 worth. Mate, what a difference THAT made! Next thing to install is a bigger cam and roller rockers. :D

Yes way. Have a chat to, "Kevin Geary Performance" yourself if you like. (0274-413-384) He knows me well. I'd say he's worked on more HSV's than you have. "Was it a dyno difference or traffic light drag difference??" Both. 8) But hey, even with all the mods done to it so far, it still wouldn't do a 10 second quarter. Maybe after a bigger cam, roller rockers and a supercharger kit thrown on I might get close to a 10 second 1/4. :bounce: :bounce:
