hi guys got a 3.8 v6 in my surf and went to thompsons yesterday and went great. although stopped off on the way home yesterday for a christmas thing and then a few hours later, started up and something was wrong. sounds like it is out of fuel but plenty there and the fuel pumps are working and changed the filter but now i dont have a clue. starts up then revs a bit then revs drop and sometimes it picks them back up but other times it just stalls. also has a surge tank but dont think its the problem. any info would be great.
Cheers, Tim
sounds like what my pajero did and i ended up having to replace the idle steeper motor. not sure if your motor has one, but it may have, and it could be.

Sam
i'm not sure if i have one either and my dad and uncle dont know what it is either. even if i plant my foot on the gas it just goes dead but i can kind of pump the accelerator nicely and can keep it going for a little while with it almost stalling everytime.
sounding more and more like the steeper motor to me. gingerly ease on the throttle and your fine for a bit, but try to take off even slightly quick and the revs just drop, but take your foot off the gas and the pick up again then do the fluctuating thing again...?

Yeah that sounds right, what would a steeper motor look like?? and where would i find it roughly? Cheers for the info
cheers wacko, had a look around that general area and took a few plugs off and now it seems to be going ok so just have to find out what that plug does and then fix that. will post pics of the plug when i get home
this is the plug i took out. does anyone know if it is important?? and if i should bother trying to fix it
and you may be able to see it just to the left of the air filter at the back.
if its the airflow meter i would fix it then id say it would run normally, mates truck was sucking in air after the meter so it wasnt putting enough full in, seemed liked it was starving for gas but (which it was cause the computer was telling it to put f$*K all in)
If it is your airflow meter then yes definitely get it fixed - worst case it will run overly lean and you'll put holes in pistons. Could also be TPS.. better pics needed.
went to holden picked up my new throttle position sensor and asked them if they could plug their computer in but couldn't find the plug so i just put it in myself and now she's back to purrin like a kitten. thanks guys for the help. now off to get my 31s changed over, hopefully save some gas instead of having the 33s on road.
