Hello, ive got a oil leak on my 93 terrano, 2.7. ive got a feeling its coming from the crank seal, its only leaking very slowly and i cant really be bothered pullnig the engine out, plus i dont really have the experience to do so.
if i just leave it and keep an eye on it and always ensure theres plenty of oil in it, will i face some serious consequences down the line??

Re: Crank seal
Hi Paulie,
If it is the front seal, then you don't have to remove the engine to get at it.
I have just had mine done.
Remove the fanbelts, and bottom pulley. This will give you access to the seal.
I would imagine the nut on the end of the crank will be a PITA to get off. I had the local garage do mine.
Make sure they use good strength loctite when reinstalling the nut, as mine came undone and the pulley fell off.
But thats another story all together...
If you decide to keep going with it, remember that if oil can get out then water can get in
Cheers

Re: Crank seal
thanks for that, unfortunately its the rear seal, rang adventure 4x4 and they said around 550 plus gst to do it, doesnt sound to bad
Re: Crank seal

I guess either way you have to remove the box, Transfercase etc to get the bellhousing off, then replace the $20 seal, so the $550 would be about right for the labour to do all that.

Re: Crank seal
Maybe it's just my vehicle. But I find it a whole lot easier to pull the engine out for clutch jobs and the like than trying to remove the gearbox.
Re: Crank seal
i havent done one before, but if it was the rear main, wouldnt you just take the driveshaft out, slide the gearbox back and do it lik so,u dont need a hell of al ot of room to do it
would be a weekend job at most i guess.

Re: Crank seal
Im not sure of who make it but at REPCO or SUPERCHEEP theres a product that u add to your oil to stop oil leeks IE it makes the seals swell up it could be a quick fix for you but its my guess that it will start leeking again later on down the track a bit
