Hilux/P76 Leyland conversion

Post by gregor7 »

I have an 81 hilux fitted with a Leyland P76 engine and 3 speed auto and am thinking about replacing the auto with a 5 speed manual does anyone have any info on this motor/vehicle combo?

I,ve heard of Marks 4wd adaptors heavy duty 5 speed, dont know if its compatible?

Any info on this at all would be great as i have tried numerous web searches and not yet found anything.

Cheers.

My rangie has a P76 in it, Bored to 5.0 with maxed out heads and the rest. The gearbox is a standard 4 speed rover box which handles to power well. The 5 speed boxs ( from various reports) are to weak and as to one that would suite the lux and it's transfer case I'm not sure. How about a manual valve for the auto box and a quick shifter. It's almost a manual and if you change the ratios up a bit then drop the ratios in the transfer case you should get a better road speed but keep you low range ability. :D

Try the Castlemaine Rod Shop in OZ. You can mate a Hilux 5-speed and T/C to the back of the P76. Over time you will chew it out as they are not really made for power, but they are cheap as chips now and you'll go through quite a few Hilux boxes before you've spent the same money on one of those heavy duty marks ones... all depends on your budget I guess...

Hope that helps
