70 series Landcruiser Need help with suspension / knocks

Post by crizpy »

heya ive had a 70 series swb for about one week
13bt 1987 with 2" ome lift 140,000k's
rancho adjustable shocks
electric difflocks front and rear, I have some really Irritating knocks in the front which i didnt pick-up on before i bought it,
I was hoping to use this as a daily driver but these little problems are pissing me off and Im considering buying a car to run round in.
probs are the front suspension doesnt feel very tight when on country roads , when offroad there is a knock in the front when going over some bumps but the most irritating one is behind the steering wheel in the steering coloum somewhere it keeps knocking onroad or offroad and i cant find what the prob is..
I just replacec the tie rod end because it had Heaps of play in it, took it for a drive afterwards and Noticed No difference still have knocks .

anyone in wellington that could have a look for me?
anyone got any ideas on what i can look for,
would a old steering dampner give me problems/knocks. and if i replace it would it tighten up Feel of it.
would removed swaybar give me any knocks?
ive checked all I can for play and movement , havnt jacked up car and wiggled wheels and stuff tho,
I spent top $ on this machine and im really frustrated I cant sort these little issues,
Im slightly mechanically minded but dont know much SO any help at all anyone??

My 70 steering coloum rattles like that and I've a funny feeling they all do, I always go through WOF's ok and they never say anything about it?

The only other rattle I've had in the front was when my swaybar mount broke and the it was swinging around knocking against the diff housing.

You may want to jack the front up and check all the spring bushes, U bolts leaf springs and all that sort of stuff for any movement and generally have a good look at all the steering and suspension componants for any movement or wear. Sounds like somethings up if its not steering too well but it shouldnt be too major to find the problem and fix it 8) 8)

Hi

I have had noises out of the front end when I broke and lost one of the bolts to the anti sway bar.

The other noises i had was from some anti- inversion plates that I had welded on to stop the shackels inverting.
I have since removed the plates and installed greasable anti-inversion shackels......

If the springs are a bit tired you may just be hitting the bump stops or it could be a bad shock.....

my experience is that noises in that area are very hard to track down so keep a open mind as it may not be from where you originally think....

My experience is to make sure ALL the U bolt nuts are tight and that the spring(leaves)are greased..OME have grease entry points along the spring-reason you ask about the bolts being tight..as my(just finshed a lex conversion-respring etc..)had loose nuts and one had fallen off just after the first trip out..it handled like a bag of shyt..I tightened all the nuts-found a spare nut and everything was..shall we say handling like it should have..does it have a steering damper on it..if it's the original one then replace it with the ome one..it'll make a huge difference..
