Does anyone know if the AISAN freewheel hubs off a 60 series cruiser can be swapped in to replace the automatic hubs on a 92 Prado? And would it be a good thing to do? Thanx

Yep DO IT...this is a bit of work and messing round but worth it, can be done you need to find the following parts:
- Wheel axle thingy off a beam axle hilux (got them off Turoa he knows the model)
- 2 sets of nuts and washer for the half shafts (Early 40 series....can get these for $10 new)
- Set of aisan hubs
- May want a new set of wheel bearings whilst its apart
- spare cone washers , flat washers and hub bolts

Process
- Pop the wheel off and pull off the wheel axle thingy
- press the wheel studs and the top thingy of the wheel axle off
- press on the beam axle surf one
- press the wheel studs back in
- replace the wheel bearing
- fit back on truck and use the 2 nuts and washer instead of the screw on one held on by
- at the top of the half shaft spline dremel out the notch so it goes down all the way, do a test fit first and you will see where it needs to go
- fit the Aisan hub...on one side we needed to move the washer from the outside of the hub to the inside as there was a 2mm difference, strip the hub to do this
Make sure you check the hub bolts later as well as jacking the truck up and engaging the hubs and checking they work.
I still have the spacer mod washers spare if you wanted them, with these you just chuck them on and then the aisan hubs, I don't need them, one has a broken bolt that needs drilling out and you will need a new hub gasket and some new bolts...

the factory electric ones are just as strong (when they are working), MarkR on here has shattered a few of the spacer kits and EVH? hubs but then he has a 3L which has more torque going thru it, OldBlue on here does the electric conversion .....the only think I don't like about that is if you loose the allan key in the bush...manuals are much easier...but in saying that they are a good cheap fix if thats what you want....

Why bother swapping out? Less fretting surfaces on the factory system and they are stronger.
I have used mine for 80,000k's now and have had one stop working when a mechanic adjusted my wheel bearings for a warrant. (He did not know how to set the brushes up) and one stop working thru getting gunked up.
Regular checks found when the problem was there and they were easily sorted.
(Brushes cleaned)
I have not ripped the wires out and I would be likely to, with where I drive with big chains on in deep ice and snow.
I like the convenience of the push button hubs too.

Oldblues mod may be easy especially as he's close to you, really depends what sort of 4wd'ing your mate is doing...if its harder trips then get them sorted, if its the occasional icey road then do them when they break ....even then they may just need a good clean....
