front diff is an 8" high pinion reverse cut gear, its a common problem for these, same with the prado diffs.....

Now the way to break a front diff in a cruiser (80 or 100) is by going backwards, so never do a reverse snatch otherwise you may loose crownwheel teeth

Putting a locker in the front won't solve anything; the locker replaces the diff CENTRE, not the crownwheel/pinion set, which is the Achillie's heel of the vehicle so that will still break.

I'm not really sure believe it or not! Pulled up on a club run, was running well, two of us winched up a rolled 4 wheeler from 300 feet down, thought it was too slow so I asked my brake man to try driving backwards and tow it up instead, axles a little bit crossed, a bit of wheelspin in dry clay so gave it up. No sound, no nothing and i certainly didn't see anything violent enough to break anything. Then went to drive out after the recovery and "crunch crunch" unbelievable!

The unbroken bits still look good too, good tooth pattern, no obvious wear on the teeth, no partly fractured teeth from what might have been a previous effort. It looks like a perfectly good diff and its just let go. It wouldn't have been so bad if I was driving it myself and knew I'd screwed up. What a pissoff, I bought the cruiser for reliability after the Jeep, buggered if I know whether that was such a good move now....

There you are, Jerry's hit the nail right on the head, but i'm not going to retype all this.

ahh righto, yea they are strong going forward but not backwards so just something you need to be aware of and drive accordingly

Ring gear and pinion is fine, if I can't get the easier option of a good complete head. Assembling and setting up this type of diff holds no fears for me as i've done hundreds in a past life, spare time's at a premium for me though. Is yours 10 x 41? What sort of condition? PM with price? cheers

My life story, I always wind up with the expensive option if there's a choice. I wonder if they went to a finer tooth (41/10) in later models to enlarge the contact area to try and give it more strength - especially in reverse. i'll have to research more and if anyone can make any suggestions I'm all ears (eyes?)

I doubt the slighly slower ratio will affect much if at all on soft ground, but might make Hi 4 on the highway interesting.

it may be doable if the bolts line up and everything else is the same. Mine doesn't have a centre diff either. Its a part time 4WD 5 speed non turbo but it does have free wheeling hubs, its a NZ/Australian basic model.

I really appreciate everyone's help and advice, especially Mudzilla. I'm all good now, Dan Cowper has come to the rescue with a very well priced complete diff head - exactly the same as mine in fact but with a full head of teeth.

Most importantly I've learned a valuable lesson from you but I could have done with it last week. Don't tow anything in reverse! cheers and thanks again. Gordon.

This is good to know for the future, considering I've done a far few pulls in reverse (the track determined that) that went flawlessly.

I've never been keen on big angry snatches forwards let alone in reverse...

Yes Andrew, its going to be interesting when the track won't allow me to turn around, if you know the weakness though, its half the battle. Anyway, Maybe a good mexcuse to get the winch rope out.

I learned the hard way with my HiLux ( 80's diffs) .. They dont like backwards loads, Specially shock loads :!: :(
Your 80's is rare with part time 4x4, a cool thing a lot of 80 owners spend $$ to get.

it took me 5 years (and another long story) of waiting to get this one too. Has a full, padded warranted internal roll cage too. Sort of a padded cell.

You can't have mine, I'm always using it. Actually, the way this truck performs (not including the broken diff) you need a cage like that just to keep Patrol drivers out.

I've had 'em all since about 1974 Muddie, not my first Land cruiser, nor my second either, not quite a total convert...... it just goes about its business in a solid way, nothing too exciting, maybe what I need these days... I still have the weapons if excitement is called for. (Jeep, etc.)
