replacing 3y with a 3L

Post by J_Dub »

right just exploring options here.
my 3y is sold so realy need to find a motor quick smart.. im considering other things but a 3L is appealing cause they are pretty well respected and can be turboed easily... and its toyota.

Anybody on here replaced a petrol hilux motor with a diesel and can give me some heads up on issues i might face?
Will a 3L bolt up to a G series box with an L series bell housing?
how will i go with engine mounts, will i have to grind and replace the whole mount from the chassis or can i get bolt ons?
im trying to keep this repower as simple as possible

Most of the drizzles used the w56 box because of the stronger input shaft and the thumping that diesels' give them. Having said that, I think (but am not %100 sure) that the 3l (2.8) was only put in front of the R series gearboxes, which are stronger again than the w series. And of course the g series was at the bottom of the heap.
So even if you could mount it up nice and easy to the g, why would you? I you are going to go to this much effort (time and cash) spend a bit more of both and build a decent strength unit.
IMO anyway.

I stand corrected.
Having said that though, if you are building as a 4x4 toy with reasonable sized tyres, why not build it a bit stronger?

sweet that answers that question....
Rok i think the g52 is underated sometimes, yea its not the strongest but Jafas had the g52, gimmemud has a g52 behind a comy v6..
its a start point anyway to get me rollin again..
and if that fails the w series will bolt up the same anyways.

after posting this question I recieved an offer to purchase a damaged yet driveable (just) VR comy with v6 with only 160ks on it for $500 :D bodys stuffed but everything else is sweet.
Damn ide be able to sell enough parts easy to make back the money... Free motor 8) problem is if i was to grab it i gota find somewhere to store it till motor comes out :? hint hint anyone
