toyota swivel housing question

Post by J_Dub »

can someone explain exactly how manual hub setup works with locking the axles to the diff...

just nearing the end of rebuilding my swivel housing on the lux and fitting up the axles/cvs then the sleeve then backing plate noticed the axle isnt locked into the diff..... ie i can rotate diff or and axles dont turn..
is this right? then the axles become locked when i lock the hubs??
Note: ive bolted everything up to the backing plate, rotor and hubs not on yet

just wana be completely sure before i bolt the final bits on

just make sure the cv axle fits into housing properly .it wont go back together if its not right .The cv ball should be just inside the ball. hope this helps .I can see it in my head but hard to put into words

Hi Jared,
The FW hubs do not make the axles lock into the diff side gears.
The axles are always fitted into the side gears so there is always drive from the side gear to the CV, the FW hubs engage or disengage between the end ofthe CV and the wheel hub.
If I am correct in thinking that you have got a lockright you may find that the axle will turn without turning the diff or the other axle, this is because when there is no load on the diff the side gear is disengaged from the centre part of the lockright.
Hope that makes sense.
Cheers

no lockrite in the front, just open.
everything up to the backing plate is bolted up, so just the rotor and hubs to go..
and everything has bolted nice and tight and all faces matched up tight, but when turning the diff, the axle/cv doesnt turn..
note that just 1 side is done so far, so do both sides need to be bolted up and weight on the axle????????

If one axle is out of the truck, then turning the diff will just turn the unconnected (No axle in it) spider gear in the diff head, not the axle that's in place.
You need both axle's in the diff to be able to turn the diff input shaft and see hubs turning...

(Can see it in my head, just not write it down that well...)
It's just more fun in a lada !!
