Hi all

Thinking of getting a 1993 Pajero 3dr Softtop all kitted out.
Is there anything that I should be aware of?
The last three Mitsubishi's that attended one of our club runs broke CV's, is this a common fault?
This one has Factory Electric Diff Locker, any good?
230,000km with new Cambelt,shocks and Clutch.
Replacing my Jeep Cherokee that got very expensive to keep running.

3 cv's

Thats pretty nasty, they are a strong unit, possibly the strongest of the IFS front ends according to outerlimits guys. It is not a common fault to break cv's. Factory lockers are stonger than axles - JTop will know about that, they are a strong unit but I also know they do need the full pressure to work them (they are a factory air locker) as I shore all the teeth off mine.

they are basically a pretty substantial unit.

im sure they are great trucks when you look after them... :oops:

but the diesels have problems(so i hear). i have a 93 jtop 3ltr v6. i am VERY pleased with it, in the two years i have owned it i have replaced a wheel bearing, 1 inner cv and the transfur box and rebuilt the starter.
the transfur could have been avoided with better maintenince. but all that aside, it gets thrashed and keeps coming back for more.

not sure bout the reliability of the lockers as i havnt put mine in yet, but they cant be all bad, not as good as an ARB but still alright id say.

Thanks for that , we mainly have Zukes in our club and I want something a little different, with power to boot. Bought a Korando ,goes well but loath to get into the flesh of the club run. My old Jeep Cherokee would run circles around it. On that note are the 3l Mits thursty?
The mits I'm looking at is fairly dented and well used as a club truck.
No lift Kit, but has new starter Motor, shocks, springs and CV's !! 4 point roll cage, new cam
I agree that it was unusual for 3 CV's to bust ,hence my question. Also everytime I mention the M word I get shot down by mechanics. But thus far reports have been good. Just a little confused on the matter.

This truck is in your neibourhood I believe. Levin club. Do you know of it from the description, Bright red ? Just a shot in the dark !!

tonys?... red with silver flares? i got a windscreen off him :lol:

it seems to go quite well. the 3ltrs are very thursy, but the 3.5s are worse i think... :lol:

The 3 litres are hungry but no worse than a Heep.
You will probably find the shorter wheel base a little unnerving till you get used to it on hillsIt would be my pick of the mid sized trucks

I don't think the 3.5's are any worse petrol wise. They don't need to work very hard to do anything thats for sure. I have a 3.5 5 speed shorty and am rapt with it.

Early mitsi diesels were a little problematic and the 3.0's can do head gaskets (padero on here had one) but I'm not sure why they did them.

Thanks for the input. Feel alot better about the Mits now.
Not too sure why he is selling yet, think he want's a tuff truck again?

Have 2 mates in SWB 3.5 V6 pajeros, heaps more grunt than the 3.0 V6 but both 3.5s burn oil and have very noisy(rattly) motors, both around 130 000 kms. The 3.5s are a lot thirstier than the 3.0 One mate had a 3 litre before going to a 3.5, He wishes he stll had the 3.0, easier to work on motor, cheaper to run.

SSSHHHHHHHH I can't hear you.... Mine has 98000 and is still quiet, very quiet in fact. burble out the exhaust and injectors clicking quiet. Does need prob 2 litres of oil every 10000k which I don't worry about - it puffs out when on overrun down bloody steep hills. (only did 5200km last year)

I am a VERY hard driver and expect my vehicle to go where I point it. Without watching the Rev counter etc. We have very deep sticky clay mud here in Gisborne.
The Cherokee only just kept up. Well engine wise anyhow.
Rest of it kept falling apart. That is why I sold it, I'm no mechanic. Fix a computer or a TV, that I can do. Fix a vehicle, that is another story.

mine is a little rattly from a underwater excursion... one day i will sort the front pulleys out... but not the tappets or anything and its done 180somthing odd kms. it uses oil but think thats the seals around the back of the tappet covers, its oily round there. but i only use it for 4wdn so im not too worried.

I think Tonys getting into Trials, Hence the sale.

ITs a good truck in mechanical condition as far as i know. Its only the dents that make it a look a bit rough but who wants a straight bush truck anyway.

A soft top isnt going to keep the street kids out either. :wink:

I had a 3.5 Pajero and i loved it, Never had any problems with it and the motor never made any noises it shouldnt have. The diesel pajeros have a bad reputation but you will be fine with a petrol.

iv just bought a 3.5v6 auto, 150 oookms $3500, they are getting very cheap to buy. we bought for a second car and for towing a trailer etc. how long do the transmissions last? am going to give it a full service, trans, fluids etc, pass on the cam belt, too pricey, it would be cheaper to let it go bang and buy a new truck!!!
