Not hard stick with what you have, 1kz is engine gearbox and computer new mounts and depending what gearbox there will be an offset rear driveshaft, 2.8 is the easier upgrade.
You could sort out the 2.4 better the devil you know especially if you are not a mechanic.

Re: engine upgrade for ln61 surf
i am a mechanic tho,do u recon i should wind up my boost and maybe fit a higher flowing exhaust untill it goes bang?then put in a 2.8 with a turbo.
Re: engine upgrade for ln61 surf
What do you use it for? Do you want torque? reliability? fuel economy? There are hundreds of options, but you need to narrow them down by looking at what will work best for you.
Re: engine upgrade for ln61 surf
I mainly use it for day to day driving with the odd weekend trip in the bush, theres nothing really wrong with my engine i just want more power, along with reliability.i'v been told the old non turbo supra motor would fit straight in but will run a bit hot.i;v also been told the 2.8 diesel motor with a turbo would be the best option due to its power increase, ease of fitting and lack of cert needed.
Re: engine upgrade for ln61 surf
my truck started out 2.8,then 1kz,now lexus.my advice if i were in your position would be put a 5l in it.bolts straight in,then look at super charging with a/c clutch on super charger.pwr right off idle,no lag,& can turn off when not needed.ah cheap to run.should have taken my own advice.

Re: engine upgrade for ln61 surf
Would be a hell of a lot easier to just sell the ln61 and get a kzn130. Price wouldn't be much difference and you get coils. Or sell the 61 buy a 60 with the solid front axle then do the motor swap. I personally wouldn't go to the trouble of engine conversion when you have the in between of the good models.

Hi andy not hard to tell you've spent some time with Richard

But I gotta ask, why did you go from the intercooled 1kz to a lexus

Go an L series as it bolts in your mounts, 2.8 (3L) or 3.0(5L) turbo and intercool it, plenty of power for your needs, and easy to do.

Re: engine upgrade for ln61 surf
Yep, I'd go 3L or 5L... the turbo and plumbing from your existing setup can be retrofitted to the 3L to make it sing nicely while still being reliable and economical.

Re: engine upgrade for ln61 surf
If you do turbo the 2.8 you need to take the fuel compensator off the 2.4 fuel pump and put it on the new engines fuel pump.
You also want to make the exhaust manifold flow a little more free, stick with the L series and a turbo or supercharger for forced induction.
Oh and use an exhaust pyro to monitor the engine temps.
